WoWSimple Question:
What is the easiest and cheapest way to get into Wings of War?

Buy "Watch your back" for WW1. Everything you need is in the box. You don't need the minis to play the game.

Fleabay, or Wargames market.

Other auction sites will occasionally have stuff, and when they do it's almost always cheaper. And there's always Amazon, you'd be surprised how much gaming stuff they carry.

Do you want to play WWI or WWII?
I like both for different reasons.

Already has minis.
Though to save a few bucks you may want to wait for the deluxe set that is due in Sep. 2009
it comes with 4 alternate repaints (1 Zero, 1 wild cat, 1 Spitfire, 1 Me-109)
and it comes with the starter box.
price is around 40-ish though buying it from a online retailr it will cost a few bucks less.
It is quite a bargain when you consider online a starter box is about 28 bucks and getting one of each plane (4 planes 10 each) is about 68 bucks.

I saw the thread title, clicked on it, and thought to myself "ooh, someone is talking about World of Warcraft." I should have known better. I epic fail.

I concur, I'd just have to watch him go through withdrawals then. That wouldn't be pretty.

Silly people, I'm talking about the card game (although there is also a mini's game, and several board games plus a RPG to accompany the MMO).
Darn this is my milestone post and I used it on WoW! Guess I'll have to be vociferous and make my 425th be my pulls. Oh well.

I had a bunch of friends that all became World of Warcraft addicts. I stopped hanging out with them because they could never talk about anything else.

My friend quit high school because of the compy game.
And yes he lives in his monther's basement.
Never had a job. Just stays home and plays WoW.
I played the minis game. Nice mechanics. Just don't want to get sucked into another money pit.

I hear you. War at Sea is enough of a money pit for me.

The WoW Mini game is nice but too expensive. If the price point is lowered it'd be much better.
I do quite enjoy the online game (new expansion due out next year goes from lvl 80 to 85 YAY!) and play with a bunch of my gaming friends and some of my co-workers.
Wings of War is a fun game to play too. One of the guys in my gaming group tried introducing it to us a year or so ago. We played for a little bit but it never caught on. He owns some of the models and some of the WWI sets. Nice mechanics, nice models, nice artwork, lot of fun too. Price is reasonable. I think we were more into WAS at the time and now they're all more into FoW (they went into a AAM phase before hitting FoW).
ACS: Are you wanting to do the WWI or WWII versions? I think any of the starter boxed sets (for WWI or WWII) come with everything you need. I've never played the WWII edition but the WWI edition came with cardboard versions of all the models and everything. A later set introduced elevation and I think that is when the models come in handy. If you don't want to use elevation you should be fine with the boxed set like Toronto suggested.

so, WoW WWII - does this game need a map? I believe it does not use hexes... but does it need a map? Where can I download a quick starter rule book? Thanks

Don't know about downloading a rule book, but here:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=24
And they sell a map for it, it's like 80 USD. A green grass table-mat it like 15USD at a train store...

does anyone have a pic of these WoW maps? I would not buy one until I see it; also are the maps used for AAM good for WoW?

No map required, no minis required. ALl just nice to have.
Here is a resource thread I put together awhile ago.

yes, I forgot about this thread. Amongst your links the rules for the ww2 version is not present, but I found them at www.wingsofwar.it
I will read those rules and have a test game, after that I will give some feedback.

Time for a little update: received the minis - those are awesome, worth every cent. Also every mini came with its deck of maneuvers.
I read the rules (the basic ones) and part of the advanced ones, the game seems simple and fun.
What I lack to actually play a game is that ruler and the markers, tokens and counters (since I did buy only individual planes).
Could someone post the dimensions of the ruler (length/width) and at least the number and composition of the damage and speed counters pls?

For the cost of 2 minis I would go ahead and get a boxed set either Down of War or Fire from the skies. Unlike the WWI game the damage counters are all tokens and not cards. Mine are all punched already.
The boxed set contains 6 pilot boards, 2 rulers, all the damage counters, various other markers, of course more plane cards and manuever desks.
Just my thoughts.

Having played both the WWI and WWII (Actually own it). I would personally go for the WWI over the WWII version.
I like the WWI because:
1.) Has more flavor in the game (eg Guns Jamming)
2.) WWII version can be "unbalanced." The WWII version planes that do more damage tend to win the games.
3.) WWII maneuver decks for the most part are generally the same (Even though they are different deck letters) except maybe for the dive bombers (Just really slow) and one Spitfire side step maneuver.
4.) WWII games can be relatively short due to the substantial amount of damage being dished out.

I would generally agree, WWI is a great game. WWII is still pretty young yet without a large variety of aircraft. Really hoping they introduce large bombers which will make scenario building fun.
The other nice thing about WWI is it is fairly unique, it is basically the only thing out there in large numbers. The slower moving planes do lend themselves better to this type on manuever system.
WWII is competing with some other mianstream games, but can still be fun. Really a matter of preference.

Don't get me wrong. The WWII is still a respectable game. The WWII offers some nice features they improved on over the WWI. I like the damage counters instead of the cards. Easier to mix in a cup to distribute the damage instead of the shuffling of cards. The printing of the maneuver deck letter on the back of the cards is really nice too.
Drawing of one maneuver card over three has pros and cons. More realistic for maneuvering and fluid game. However, it can be easy to lose track if everyone has moved especially in larger player games. One person at our LGS came up the idea of drawing two cards instead of one. It makes it easier to keep track and still makes the game pretty fluid.
Still think the WWI is more fun to play though.
