US sub fleetYeah, I know, off the wall here....but here goes:
1x USS California
3x USS Laffey
4x USS Barb
4x USS Archerfish
2x F6F-3 Hellcat
Use the California and the Laffey's to take one objective, while the 8 subs are on denial duty. With the Barb's "Audacious Attack", on one turn you can effectively get (assuming all subs are alive) 12 torpedo attacks.....a pretty decent spread, especially if they're all at range 1 or closer and at full-power.
The entire thing depends on hot torp rolls, so it's a win big or fail miserably build. The Laffey's can help with fighter coverage as you can just place the Hellcats anywhere and then use the Radar Pickett SA to move one of them (once per turn for three turns since you have 3 Laffeys).
Just for fun I soloed it against a Jap build that consisted of the following:
1x Musashi
1x Yahagi
2x Isokaze
2x Akitsuki
2x Shoho
2x Zero
3x Betty
3x Emily
Used the Hellcats to eliminate the Zeroes first, but lost a sub in the process. Betty's proved worthless.
Turn 2 saw a Shoho and an Isokaze go down to two Archerfish, and the loss of another US sub.
Turn 3 saw the loss of 1 Emily and all three Bettys, as I tried a bombing run on the Laffey's closing in on one objective. Both Laffey's scored 6 hits, a Hellcat annihilated the third Betty. Yet another US sub was sunk, another crippled.
Turn 4 saw the Musashi easily vital the California at range 1....but the California managed a staggering 20 successes with 15 die in retaliation. Laffeys get slaughtered except for one....both Akitsukis blown out of the water by Laffeys. Another US sub sunk. US subs get revenge by killing the other Isokaze and the Yahagi. Japs claim one objective, US claims the other.
Turn 5 sees the last Jap ship, a Shoho, take 3 6's from the sole remaining Archerfish.
US had a Laffey, 1 Archerfish, 3 Barbs, and 2 Hellcats left.
Japs had 1 Emily.
It all hinged on the poor ASW rolls, an extremely lucky "parting shot" from the California, and absurdly good torp rolls from the US subs.

Wow, good game. Sounds intense. ALso, subs can be very effective, my lone opponent uses them very effectively against me.

You know sub swarms are good when even the lousy U.S. subs can be effective in a swarm.

Actually I think allied sub-swarms are better than axis, not because the subs are better, but because the asw is much worse. I always prefer to combine allies and take Truculent over Barb when I'm allowed, but every once in a while Audacious Attack does come in handy.
Usually when I take a sub swarm, I do it with dauntlesses to sink enemy destroyers, and perhaps a pby or two to harrass subs to make them easier to kill with my own subs.
Sticking with pure US, how about:
Tennessee 43
2xHoel 18 (or Laffey I guess for fighter vectoring if you don't like smoke)
Princeton 16
2xDauntless 26
PBY 7
B-25 9
2xWildcat 14
4xBarb 48
Archerfish 15
So you loose a bunch of subs, but you gain the ability to knock out enemy sub threats much easier.
If you want to get even more serious, group Princeton with the BB, take out your destroyers and put in another sub or fighter. You'll loose Princeton for sure on turn 3 or 4, but maybe it's worth it to get another sub in there.
Either way, I like your build, and what's more, any opponent you face will hate it, which is important.

Fair point, especially considering that the Avenger is kind of the ultimate anti-sub weapon, especially if it operates off a Fencer or St. Lo.
