Tips and Tricks: How to save money while playing FoW

Here to collect all your (legal) tips for savings while playing Flames of War.

I have these:

Arrow Use aircraft tokens instead of real models (they are not of much use in FoW anyway)
Arrow Use paper counters and accessories where possible
Arrow Use uncommon AAM armoured vehicles instead of metal ones - they are pre-painted, substantially lighter and cheaper. Take care, some of the vehicles in AAM have dimensions not corresponding to 15mm scale.

Idea Another tip is related to your spare infantry models from AAM. Just cut off the black round stand and glue the models to FoW-compatible base. Your Red Devil captains will be of some use now  Wink

This is the way how you can create easily (and sometimes also cheaply) a pre-painted army or build one which is not supported by official Battlefront rules (Polish/Chinese/IJA etc.).

There are a ton of companies producing 15mm WWII, Peter Pig for one, and they're usually MUCH cheaper than FoW models...

You have just to be careful, as quality and size varies a lot. Some QRF models are difficult to assemble and ugly, these from Old Glory/Quality Castings are too small for FoW and will not be accepted on tournaments.

Craig Gaming models are of lower quality, but plastic, pre-painted and  for 4 USD each and I would recommend them for people starting with FoW.

Use A&A version 2 and you will be fine! Prepainted and cheaper!  Okie

Yes and No, I bought some AAM Panthers recently and paid $11 bucks each. That is the same price as the FOW blister with the added bonus of having a straight barrel instead of that boomerang barrel that the AAM Panthers have. True, the AAM is prepainted but in many cases it is just sprayed a single color then dunked in a nasty black wash. I repaint my AAM mini's anyways so I have switched over to just buying FOW mini's exclusively. I have tried to go the cheap route with AAM mini's and it shows with poor paint/quality and inconsistent scale. I like the AAM rules (or my version of them) better than FOW, but I am done with the AAM mini's.

The big company-sponsored tourney at Recruits lets you play with anybody's minis, and has even let people run the forbidden Japanese list.

You might try http://www.warweb.com/. The Old Glory 15's Command Decision line is discounted at up to 40% off! Shocked You can pick up a package of 3 tanks for a little over $13.00 USD versus one Battlefront blister pack that goes $10 bucks USD. That's a nearly 3 to 1 cost savings. Unfortunately for me I found out about this fantastic place after I got the bulk of my army using Battlefront.  Sad  doh

I also picked up an M-32 ARV from Quality Castings directly from the manufacturer. Unfortunately shipping was almost as much as the model itself all told nearly $18.00 USD for $10.00 USD model. I needed an ARV though to fill out my HQ Troop so I just bit the bullet and got it. I recommend them for models that are hard to find but the shippimg is murder, Shocked

Anyhoo I hope this helps those who are financially prohibited by Battlefront prices. Salut y'all!

Probably your browser is blocking the transfer. MediaFire server works for most people here ...

Been away a bit, nice to see people are still posting in here.

Hey Duck, two questions about the Peter Pig dudes;

1.  Are they scaled well when next to Battlefront minis?  Most of my stuff is older BF.  The new BF sculpts are pretty bogus, skinny with gi-normous submachine guns.  A Pps-43 the size of an M-60? Not in my army.  Peter Pig Soviet snipers, scouts and quilted telogrieka coat SMG dudes (which BF don't make, seems weird not to sculpt such a common issue of uniform) look cool, if they are in proportion to the rest of my army.

2.  Where are you finding PP minis for cheap?  I can get them from England, but between the Pound and shipping they are more expensive than BF.  Is there some place in the US I can order them from?  I could go with at least the snipers, since they are always solo on the table.

Flea bay, where else? TMP's trader section also often has them. The newer ones scale well, they're redoing their lines and ditching their old stuff which was crap.
