Spotter Crazy!!OK, this spotter thing is driving me crazy.
1) Who can spot?
A: Any soldier with the Spotter sub type on the card right?
2) How far can they see?
A: 8 Hexes?
3) How close do they ahve to be to the unit they are spotting for?
A: ?????
4) Does every artillery piece and mortar have to have a spotter if they do not have line of sight?
PLEASE help me make sense of all this. Everyone I talk to lately has a different answer. Or just point me towards a link with the info. Thanks!

3) There isn't any stipulation of distance between the spotter and the unit firing, as far as I'm aware.
4) Only units with the "Indirect Fire" SA can use a spotter to shoot at something outside their own line of sight, to my knowledge.

1) Correct, any unit with the "Spotter" subtype can spot.
2) Well, theoretically, a unit can "see" as far as it wants to. However, a spotter can only spot to a unit up to 8 hexes away if the spotter has LOS.
3) The spotter can be as far away from the unit that it is spotting for as it likes.
4) Every mortar/artillery piece can shoot like other soldiers--if they have LOS. However, a few units such as the 81-82mm. mortars, 75mm Pack Howitzer, lelG18, etc, have the "Indirect Fire" SA. Only units with the "Indirect Fire" SA can have a spotter allow them to attack an enemy unit without LOS. The enemy unit must be within the range of the indirectly firiing unit, however.
Oh, I should probably mention a few of the tricky things about this...
- Not all spotters are soldiers--there is a FO jeep out there.
- The U.S. 82mm mortar has the SA "Improved Indirect Fire." This means that it has the Indirect Fire SA (see above) but any friendly U.S. commanders can also spot for the mortar, just like a spotter. However, the commander must be up to 4 hexes away from the enemy unit, not 8 like a spotter.
- Almost every spotter has the "Spotter" SA--this deals only with aircraft. A unit DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE THIS SA TO COUNT AS A SPOTTER. The Rangers do not have this SA. Only the unit type underneath the name of the unit determines whether or not something is a spotter.
Hopes that this helps!
