Space Hulk

Does any one play this game? Question

i've still got my first edition game and i've seen it's been re-printed. Cool
Duck Crusader

Yes, love the old game! I've seen the pre-release copy and it's a beauty. The mini's are single cast plastics scaled the same as the current Terminators, though the Genestealers look a little small next to their 40K counterparts. All have the base as an interigal part of the casting, and several have terrain elements cast in as well. The corridor sections have likewise been updated and are very pretty.

Quick perusal of the rules has them very much like the old ones, though I haven't had a chance to actually play yet. The biggest quibble I have is it's grossly over-priced at 100 USD. 60-65 I could see.

tech hawk just got his copy, i'll go around and play soon
cwfgamecast

When it comes to GW expect nothing less than high prices for hunks of crafted plastic that looks pretty.
smeagol

Oh yes, i am still an addict all these years after it was first published, many, many years ago.

It is IMHO probably the best and only game worth buying from the GW portfolio.

The rules are simplicity itself, and you don't keep needing a million and one expensive add on figures.

I think GW if they have republished it, will charge an arm and leg, with a hip thrown in as price tag.  It won't be cheap Sad pitty as it's a brilliant simple game, that you can get up and running after 10 mins.

Edit:-
P.S Just checked it's only £59 in the uk..... not bad i have to admit, well under what i expected GW to charge.  I still paid £20 for it 20 years ago, with not as much in it.
I just hope they haven't altered the rules too much.
Duck Crusader

Again, it's a hundred dollars. About $35 too much.
smeagol

See peeps are already selling copies of it on ebay, minus the figures, then selling the figures seperate!
Duck Crusader

S'what I'll do, wait awhile and pick the whole thing up for 35-40 bucks.
cwfgamecast

Some of my friends are picking it up for $99 from my FLGS.  I'd play with them anyway so I can save the $99 plus 6.25% tax.

I got my copy last week (being a former GW HQ employee who still keeps in touch with the powers that be Very Happy )  its almost the exact same game as 1st edition, with the only real addition being that Marines can now guard which lets them reroll close combat dice.  The new models are awesome and technically worth over $120 by themselves so the price is what you make.

Absolute classic game though.

Since you have the inside line perhaps you'll know the answer to this question. How many copies were made? Everyone's saying this was an extremely limited print run but that doesn't make a bunch of sense to me. For a game like this to break even you'd have to make a fairly decent number of copies. And I can't believe GW doesn't think there is NO demand for this game. It's been a classic for longer than many classics have been in print and is consistently in the top of lists of game people would love to see reprinted.
general Hoth

I've seen the pictures on boardgamegeek and i must say it does look good! Very Happy

I might give in and buy a copy.
DarkMercy

I got my copy in the mail. The box weighs a ton! The minis are very nice. I'm actually surprised it's only $100, considering there's 12 marines and 23 genestealers. They charge $50 for five flippin terminator models for the 40K game! It is a bit pricey though, I'll admit. But given the thickness of the corridor tiles and counters, I think I'll have the game for a quite while.
smeagol

Just wondering, if there are many if any major rule changes or addtions, compared to the 1st edition.

Iv'e been using 1st edition for 20 years now and the tiles are still great nick.

Space marines can guard now. It works similar to overwatch, costing 2 action points. It allows the marine to reroll a close combat when close assaulted. Also, LOS rules have changed a bit. There seem to be some other slight changes, but I haven't played since middle school, so I'm not sure. I'm playing later today with a guy who's more familiar witht he rules, so I'll post any changes he notices as well.

Question for those who have the game. I read that you have to paint the minis.

1. Did you paint the minis? If so how long did it take you?

2. Is the paint included?

3. Does the corridors need to be painted?

You don't have to paint the minis to play the game. The different units on each side are distinct enough that you can tell them apart fairly easily. The Space Marines are red plastic and the Genestealers are grayish plastic. No paint is included. The corridors are thick cardstock and do not need painting.

Thanks. I'm interested in picking this up, but the idea of painting a bunch of minis was holding me back. I'll check it out at my FLGS.
general Hoth

I've never painted mine and it is always good fun to play Space Hulk, it never fails to remind me of "the scene" in Aliens. Cool

But i have friends who did and it looked way better!
DarkMercy

Okay, so there are some changes. The major ones are: No reload for the heavy flamer, no full auto for the assault cannon, you draw a counter from a cup (or whatever) to determine how many CP you get for the turn. If a sergeant is on the board you can redraw if you don't like the number. Oh, and you can use a CP to clear a jam and stay on overwatch.

100,000 total.  North America only gets 25,000.

However, I wouldn't be suprised if it gets re-issued yet again...just sayin is all Wink
general Hoth

My local game store bought 12 boxes and sells them for 75 euros. Cool
TorontoBizz

$118.75 at one of my FLGS (the only one I've checked so far, but because we always play there I'll support him). Looks pretty cool, they had a display box you could check out. The marines are red, the aliens are a dark blue. This is high on my want list. And I get paid tomorrow.
general Hoth

Did you give in?

I still havent. But I'm planning to dust off my good old one. Cool

Not yet. I had to pay some bills, and I might be starting a new job soon so I have to watch my pennies for a bit. It's very tempting, it looks really cool.  Cool
general Hoth

My neighbour bought a copy from the games workshop store and told me they were sold out now.
so i rushed today to my "local" and bought a copy for myself. They had two left out of the 12 they received last week!
My neighbour and i arranged to meet wednesday with both copies for a giant space hulk. Very Happy
after battle report and pics later...

edit: i've just opened the box and i must say the board and figures have a "darker" look than the original game.
smeagol

Just using my old 1st Edition ones with the added new rules.
See how they compare.
Texas Grognard

One of my fellow gamers at my LGS has a copy. Finally I'll be able to use my Forgeworld Space Wolf conversion Termies for something. Hopefully with the release of the new Wolf Guard Terminators in the coming months they may publish some scenarios focusing on them in White Dwarf. I won't hold my breath though. Salut y'all!
hey_yu

Sad I didn't realize they released Space Hulk again until I saw this thread.  Tried looking for it online for retail or lower price, but saw it sold out.  Does anyone know if they are going to reprint this.
smeagol

Just had a few games of this, using the new rule set last night.
I will have to learn a few new tactics for the marines now, they just turned into a bloody mass, decorating the space hulk walls lol.  But as ever this has been one of my fav games to come out of the GW franchise.
It was a fantastic night, 3 fast, and most enjoyable games in a short period.
First two games, with basic squads, 1 flamer each.  I forgot how much fun it was rolling doubles on overwatch hahahaha brown trouser time Smile

My dice throwing sucked major league, not helped by my friend as a genestealer hord waltzed up the corridor and shouting "well helllllooooo lunch"
I think the new additions to some minor rule changes, does balance out the game 50-50, whereas before autocannons on overwatch just oblitorated anything.
Jesse_James

GW already has stated there are no plans for a reprint or expansions for the game.  Crying or Very sad

Maybe if they see that there is money to be made and demand maybe they'll change there mind?

Don't really know how the minds of GW works.

never bought any of there stuff.
smeagol

I always got the feeling GW worked on these grounds.
Our sales are down 25%....so lets increase our prices 25% haha

I used to buy GW stuff 20 years ago, Space Hulk all it's expansions etc  But not now, they are way to overpriced for what you get.
The quality of white metal, is top notch, but you always get the feeling if you buy a game your paying a few hundred quid extra to get what you really need lol.

They used to sell a lot of other board games from AH etc, that stopped many years ago.  I now find it quite hard to find games and expansion stuff localy, thank gawd for ebay Smile

On the plus side, i am glad they expanded on their Historical range of rulebooks, and sidestepped a little away from Fantasy only.  I quite enjoy their ancients and great war rules.

It's a shame they are not going to expand on 3rd edition, just a a few extra tile sets would do wonders.
TorontoBizz

I got it! I went to my FLGS and bought Space Hulk. He was down to four copies and said some guys were coming in and buying two at a time (probably for ebay). According to the owner, only 35, 000 english copies were produced.
smeagol

sounds about right, the ammount of 3rd edition seperate parts on ebay is quite stagering.  Plus the ammount of "Full Games" minus figures.

For those wanting to get into or try space hulk out and can't afford it  "Expanding the Hulk" website has quite a few links to 1st and 2nd edition rules and hulk tile sets to print off and try.

Iv'e even tried conversions using other sci-fi or fantasy/historical figures as a way of expanding on the core rules.  Substituting the Terminators for some modern age troops.
TorontoBizz

Were their expansions for this game in the past? I thought of buying two just to be able to build a bigger ship. Probably cheaper to make my own tiles.
smeagol

Yes two to my knowledge.
"Genestealer" and "Deathwing"  both introduced phykers and more caharacters, like the genestealer patriach, hybrids "half Human half Genestealer" and those gawd damn powerful Terminator Librarians, with assorted new weaponry, that I think are in 3rd edition from the start, not sure as i haven't got my ikle mits on a copy lol.

Each came with expended missions and new tiles to add to Space Hulk.
general Hoth

We're having a game with two boxes of space hulk tonight. Very Happy
general Hoth

Our first game, 10 P.M.

I lost the first game as the genestealers (scenario 4) and won the second one as the marines. Cool

We had a chat afterwards about the new edition. We agreed that the new board and counters are awesome. But we somewhat prefered the old minis sculpt...

The rules are very similar to the originals but with a few twists here and there.

recommended.

To sum up, we're playing again in two weeks!
TorontoBizz

Hey General Hoth could you post a picture of the old vs new minis? I'm just curious to see how they look.

The new ones can be seen on GW website (and current WD if you buy that rag) they're lightyears beyond the old ones, which were static one piece molds.

I can relate. Cool

So I started assembling my minis today.
%$(&*$_@
Which they were pre-assembled. I've already glued the wrong gun and head to the wrong body.$%&@#
TorontoBizz

Thank god for Squadron putty! I was able to just add a some putty to the body and force one of the head on. I started off assembling the space marines by looking at the box. Their are 8 marines on the box, but their are actually 12 of them. Usually they are in three parts, a body (with legs and one arm), an arm and a head. The body has holes in them and the head and arm have a pin that slides into the hole. I was trying to match the pieces based on the pictures on the box. Their are also numbers on the sprues to help you. But I managed to screw them up anyways. I really don't like the way the minis are in the sprues, you have to cut the pieces out, they are connected by thin piece of plastic. And sometimes the pin (that you need to put in the holes) was connected to the thin piece of plastic. I mistakenly cut the pin once. I don't know why they weren't one solid piece. It would have been easier that way.

I did cut out a gun from its support. and it was the first i assembled! Had to buy some strong glue! Evil or Very Mad

Still, we might have a game including some of deathwing's figures tomorrow night. Cool
TorontoBizz

The aliens went much smoother. A few of them are one piece, just have to cut them out. Everything is assembled now. Just have to punch out the counters and read the rules/play a dry run.
general Hoth

We're having a game wednesday night.
We might also play formula dé to finnish the night. Cool
With a good old Burgundy.

General, it sounds like you know how to have a good time  Cool . The Burgundy sounds nice. I've read the rules once, and I'm now reading the scenarios. I'm hoping to play the first scenario as a solo game to get a feel for it.
general Hoth

Had a boardgame night at my place. started with an AAM game then moved on to Space Hulk. We played the Alarm scenario.
We exchanged teams for the second game.
Both times the Marines got massacred. Cool

I'm potentially planning to play the game with a friend sometime this upcoming week.  For those of you who have played the game before I was wondering what is a fun and balanced mission to play.

Thanks

Scenario 3 is a good challenge to start.
See how you fare on this one. Rolling Eyes
carrion

played it for the first time today and it was fun and easy to pick up.  Should have bought back in ninties.

I just got my copy yesterday, decided to buy it and Blood Bowl. 2 games I haven't played in ages and don't mind getting back into. Gave my minis to a friend to pain, should have my first game ( again ) in a few weeks. Any online posibilities for this??

Lowecore wrote:

Probably not.  Games Workshop keeps a tight hold on their products.  Online retailers cannot even list GW products with prices.
carrion

Wouldn't be that hard to make your own maps and use a dice roller.

general Hoth wrote:

Thanks for the scenario suggestion.  Gave it a play today with three players.  Jesse_James as the Genestealers and two other players playing a Marine Squad each.  I ended up GM the thing.

For the 1st three turns we forgo the timer because everyone was learning.  Afterwards the timer was in play.  The game was pretty much a killing for the Genestealers.  Good game Jesse_James.

I think the players playing the Marines didn't fully realize the usefulness of overwatch.  Also, I wasn't fully sure of the game plan they had to get the CAT across.  Though one of the players did secure the exit way then went away from the strategy.  In all I think it was a decent first game to get a feel of the game.
