Soviet Union [150PT]

I played a couple of games of AAM.  All of them were team games though.  So, I'm relatively new to AAM.  As far as I know we don't play with the Expanded Rules.  I was tinkering with the following Soviet Union 150PT force:

original build wrote:

[64PT] KV-1 x2
[22PT] SU-85 (1939-1945 Unit Cost)
[16PT] Fanatical Sniper x2
[8PT] Hero of the Soviet Union
[32PT] Cossack Calvarymen x8
[8PT] Minefield x4
[150PT] - 14 Units - 4 Obstacles

The premise of this build is a fast moving strike force.  Both Fanatical Snipers will be placed in the KV-1 and can be deployed on the map to help hinder enemy troop movement and/or hunting artillery units.  The mines are used for later placement to aid on better opportune times to strike sections of the opposing force by hindering enemy movements.

There are two concerns I have with the build, one the Cossack Calvarymen seem a little fraile at times.  Second, the build relies on the KV-1 and SU-85 to take care of all the anti-tank.  Granted the Hero of the Soviet Union maybe able help out in this department.

However, I think the build could be fun to play because it's mobile and has a decent 'punch' to take care of tanks, troops and artillery.  Also, I think this type of build would require thought and positioning to use effectively.

[64PT] KV-1 x2
[22PT] SU-85 (1939-1945 Unit Cost)
[16PT] Fanatical Sniper x2
[8PT] Hero of the Soviet Union
[9PT] Cossack Captain
[16PT] Cossack Calvarymen x4
[15PT] Communist Partisans x5
[150PT]

Could use some constructive comments, etc for improvements.

On a sidenote, does anyone know the figure size limits for games greater than 100PT?

Thanks
Sharpe

150 pts isn't a sanctioned amount, so there's no unit limit prescribed.  We usually use 20, but it's up to you.  Really depends on how many maps you're using.

Any Russian build with two KV-1s and a tank destroyer is going to be tough to crack in general. Though I tend to include an ammo dump and some anti-air in any 150 point games. Since the Russians have no AA or Fighters we like to give them the Bofors to use.
Also, I think you are going too heavy on the Cavalry, but to each his own, you can play this game a number of ways and when you get tired of them there are plenty of other great Russian pieces to use instead.
I also recommend that you try the expanded rules, the points bonus for nation pure builds is useful independent of the other rules(overwatch, enfilade, etc.) and platoons are a hoot! Good times!

Have to agree w/ the Captain...that's alot of Cossacks. They fall pretty easily. Remember that their strength is in hand to hand. If they charge into an occupied hex, they still draw def fire. A disrupted 3/3 unit isn't pretty. Generally I've seen them get mowed down long before it gets to that point. They are good for going after soft targets like the ammo dump, or concealed threats like snipers of forward observers.

KVs are beasts, but be careful with them. They still crack if played carelessly. Their AT dice are so-so, meaning that long shots against big German tanks are more likely going to put the Soviet tank at undue risk. The under-emphasized strength of Soviet tanks is their AI values...the KV, IS-2, and IS-3 are deadly to infantry and planes.

I'd consider a Cossack Captain on one of those KVs and lose a few of the horseys.  Wink

Thanks for the recommendations.  Based on the comments I adjusted the build to:

[64PT] KV-1 x2
[22PT] SU-85 (1939-1945 Unit Cost)
[16PT] Fanatical Sniper x2
[8PT] Hero of the Soviet Union
[9PT] Cossack Captain
[16PT] Cossack Calvarymen x4
[15PT] Communist Partisans x5
[150PT]

There is a great platoon in the expanded rules that has much of what you are playing, but with a discount and special deployment.

Namely, the Soviet Partisan Platoon:
Cossack Captain
3x Communist Partisans
Fanatical Sniper

23 Points

Special Rule:During deployment, The Cossack Captain and Fanatical Sniper may deploy in any unoccupied hex on the edge of the battle map.

That's right, Partisan Snipers behind enemy lines! Good times, and happy SS Hunting!

I'm kinda tempted on getting the Expanded Rules.

I would say nix all cav units except for the Cossak Captain and use mousin nagants and commissars instead. But to each his own.

Do so. I haven't finished studying mine yet, but I can already tell it's gonna be a whole different (and better) game!
