Smoke this

I've read and re-read the clarifications and FAQs and still do not understand exactly what the effect of smoke is supposed to be (besides clouding the issue)... please help.

A sector containing a smoke screen blocks line of sight. A unit in a smoke screen has concealment.
(from the rules clarifications dated 9/16/2009 regarding the smoke screens on particular ships)
How does this come into play? If one cannot see into a sector (Line of sight) then how is one to attack the unit that might need to make a concealment roll?

Is it the case that one can ONLY be attacked by LOCAL attacks if you're in a smoke screen? And that is the only time one need make concealment rolls?

Line of sight is not blocked into or out of a sector with smoke (only if you have to trace line of sight through that sector out the other side).  So in addition to local units shooting each other, units from outside can shoot into the sector.  If the attack comes from outside the sector, your unit is safe on a 5 or 6, if the attack comes from the inside, it comes with just a 6.

I concur...

Instead of attacking the destroyer can make a smoke screen during the surface attack phase.  You can shoot into and out of, but not through the sector containing smoke.

It lasts the turn it was created and until the end of the following turn.

Save on a 5 of 6 if adjacent or save on a 6 only if local.

Just to clarify local planes and submarines are subject to the effects ofsmoke as well when attacking units in smoke....correct?

Yes both planes and the ships/subs they are attacking get concealment rolls but only succeed on a "6".

Just to note ships with the Improved Radar special ability effectively ignore smoke.

OK, I think I got it.

"Smoke" (and squalls?) is an infinitly high, exactly rectangular shape that is denser to those attempting to look through it than those looking into it.
I am SO confused...

You aren't confused at all in game terms.  That's a very good summary of how smoke and squalls function.

I have a somewhat related question, which i've tried looking up but cannot seem to find.

When a ship creates a smokescreen, does that smoke remain in the sector it was created, or does it move with the ship? I know that it lasts from the time it is created, until the end of the FOLLOWING turn, so what does the smoke do until then?

I have house ruled that one may choose whether smoke stays with the ship, leaves a trail, or stays in the previous sector (to represent smoke buoys, or smoke from a still or moving destroyer which, as i understand, generated the smoke from its smoke stacks).
swarbs

It stays where it is.
