OPERATION DICEBUCKET

Due to the fact that our admirals have proven incompetent in cruiser and destroyer night actions, our battleships have an inconvenient propensity to short-circuit in battle and we've flat out used up all our carriers, I am ordering a completely implausible and a-historical strategic redeployment.

Admiral Halsey has been dispatched with USS Enterprise, USS Washington and all available surface ships to the vicinity of the Aleutian Islands where God willing we will be able to go a week without losing a major combatant. Further actions in the Solomons will be conducted exclusively by submarine forces.

Submarine Squadron 13 is directed to proceed immediately to the waters off Guadalcanal, prevent the anticipated Japanese efforts to bombard Henderson field and sink all enemy ships encountered. I will direct tactical operations personally from my flagship USS Atlanta.

This operation will be code-named Operation Dicebucket. Good luck and happy hunting!

I just thought of something - if I were to somehow sink both your BBs, perhaps I could eke out victory (? would need to go consult the rulebook)

Final result: 4/59 torpedo hits. I put the odds of torpedo rolls this bad at: < 1%

But that's the chance you take when you go for torpedos...

may the presence of the yukikaze shift the odds a little bit, especially some torpedos are fired at her.

I wanted to take out Yukikaze in turn 2 to stop harrassment effects. I shot 9 torps at her, expecting to likely sink her (>80% chance). Didn't sink her of course, which cost me 3-4 shots the next turn due to continued harassment. Plus took 12 more torps to kill her. So based largely on my crappy rolls, she soaked up ~25 torpedo shots!

And my shooting at Haruna was equally bad. Turn2/3 I shot 18 shots at her, counting on a cripple at least (again > 80% chance) and couldn't do it. Then in turn 4 10 more shots and even then couldn't sink...

The upshot is: roll a 6 once in a while...

SUBJECT: ACTION REPORT - OPERATION SNAKEEYES

(Please note that the operation previously code-named Dicebucket has been assigned the new code-name Snakeeyes)

Normally I would say that the performance of SubRon13 in the recent engagement was such that it made the recent Battle of Savo Island look like a tactical masterpiece.

However, I must take responsibility for the outcome of the battle, in that I neglected to account for the fact that functional torpedos are not expected from the munitions branch until some time in 1943.

As my final command before going down with my flagship, I have ordered all ships in the area to return to Pearl Harbor. My recommendation to CNO is this God-forsaken jungle island just isn't worth the trouble.

Nimitz out.
