Question on procedure. Can you lay smoke as part of the movement phase? I've been told on this very forum that smoke can be layed as part of the surface attack phase. And so would not be present during the air combat phase, unless it was layed the previous turn. Does that makes sense?

Raevskit has this habit of doing most of his actions for the turn in one post. He's a busy guy and is also like 14 hours ahead of eastern US so when he's posting, I am sleeping.
Anyway, his post includes that the Luca will lay smoke as his portion of the surface phase since that is all that will happen, no body in range for guns, etc.
Hope that helps. When you start playing online games, you'll get used to this sort of lingo and procedure. I think yesterday, in our death match, he did like 3 turns in 2 posts. He was so far ahead of me, I had to ask him to slow down or get in synch with me just so I could catch up and do a Strafing run on a destroyer. It was pretty funny, guess you had to be there.

we house rule the smokescreen as following: you can lay the screen at any point in the game last possible time is at the beginning of the surface attack phase.
important that the ship that lay smoke screen cannot made any other shooting action this turn, if it do other shooting actions this turn then lay smoke screen is prohibited in the current turn.

if you decide to lay smoke after you move, the air attack phase must deal with it. right?

yes, the penalty for that is that you cannot make AA shots from this unit.
