Official Clarification update -Torps vs. Sub phase? So, I do not see much I do not like in the new rules clarification released earlier this month.
I think my favorite change is in the way torps are now dealt with. I never liked the fact that smaller ships could not get close enough (suicide run) to release torpedos. They were always decimated in the surface fire phase. Now they may still be decimated, but they have a chance to get their licks in as well. Here comes Taffey 3.
The one confusing part to me is they added a sub phase where subs can attack surface ships that survice the surface attack phase. The confusion I have is that is states subs can attack other subs during the surface attack phase and the sub attack phase. Anyone know why? The only explanation I can think of is it gives a sub the chance to eliminate a potential threat to ships in the suface attack phase by sinking an enemy sub or waiting and if no surface targets remain in the sub phase it can still attack that sub.
I am correct in my thinking that it is either or right? A sub can not attack a sub during the surface phase and then attack again during the sub phase correct?
The other thing that confused me is it states only subs with submerged shot can attack another sub. I do not own many of the Task force unts yet, but are there any subs that do not have submerged shot?
If I recall correctly all the WAS subs have that SA. (??)

I'm not seeing where it says that a sub can attack other subs during the surface attack phase.
Is it this line that you're focusing on?
"Submarine: Make an ASW attack against a Local enemy Submarine."
If you read right before that line, it says "each Ship can attack one of the following target types:"
Therefore, the way I read it, that line is saying that Ships can make ASW attacks against Submarines during the Surface Attack phase, but Submarines may not make any attacks during the surface attack phase. My belief is reinforced by the fact that Submarines may not make ASW attacks - they may only make torpedo attacks.
I hope that answers the question.

Yep, that was the line that was confusing me. Just poor wording as I was reading it a sub can make a local attack.

I've seen several people mention that they thought that sentence meant subs could attack in the surface attack phase. It is a confusing sentence if taken out of context. That section of the update is just a list of the different targets for surface ships in the surface attack phase and the Submarine: notation indicates that subs can be a target in that phase.
