Repaint Reference___Repaint Reference______________________________
The purpose of the Repaint Reference is to provide alternate identities for existing WaS mini's, so that players can expand their fleets without buying or building custom mini's. Every unit described on this list can be represented by existing WaS mini's, and links to articles about each unit have been provided for easy reference.
The project began as a fairly simple list of sisters, with old SA's swapped around and a few new SA's added in. Then our helpful card making community got busy with corrections and suggestions, and jfkziegler himself started making actual cards. Super cool!
Now, with over 100 cards in the Card Rack (look below the list), if you can print the cards, you can essentially collect the equivalent of another 2 or 3 whole Sets. Even if you don't have duplicates in your collection, you can use the cards to give your units different identities. (Thanks entirely to jfkziegler. )
Although compatible with the Forumini Navy project, the Repaint project is independent. It's also a bit more for the players than the historians. A tiny bit. Where research revealed no clues for SA's, I have looked to R.B.'s example, and innovated. Many of the SA's adopted on the Repaint Reference were corrected or suggested by various members of our community, and I think we've done a fairly good job.
Until units get cards, all costs and SA's are simply suggestions. If you see a mistake, or have a suggestion, please let me know. Thanks!

How about an "Envy of the Fleet" SA that would allow a ship to re-roll a gunnery or anti-air attack once per game?
Not sure what ship it would apply to, probably only suitable for crusiers or DD as on a battleship it may be to strong...perhaps Prinz Eugen or the USS San Deigo?

Hey, Capt. Strange!
Do you mean like Night Fighter, but without the Darkness Rules angle?
I'd like to see an SA for just re-rolling an antiair attack, myself. We don't have one of those, yet. Maybe do that seperately?
If you're proposing an SA that can be applied to either gunnery or antiair, as needed, it should be costy. Pretty cool, though.

| chesty wrote: | I'm glad you like her. Just give me some more ideas and I'll give you some more cards. |
I'll bet players are already trying her out, considering the new Darkness rules.
How about the Suzutsuki? I can't think of a single ship I'd rather have.
As an American, I feel like a bully when I play my American fleet. The Americans are afloat in a sea of molten cheese, so why can't we give the IJN a little taste?
Please?
Edit... I couldn't find a picture of the Suzutsuki, but Wiki's got a nice shot of the Fuyuzuki, if that helps.
Edit... After some play testing, I changed the wording a bit and knocked her cost up by 2 points. (Looks like a lot to fit on one card?)
_ Suzutsuki (12)
_ Longe Lance Torpedoes, Antiair Specialist, Flak Trap (New SA's)
Flak Trap... Once per game, while in the same sector as a friendly ship, you may combine the antiair attack dice of both ships into one roll against the same target, instead of making any seperate attacks.

That is true, only Canberra has armour 3. All the others have armour 4.
I proxy Kent as HMAS Australia as the stats are closer than Canberra.
It is frustrating as Australia had Torps like Canberra.

IIRC, though, didn't Australia ditch 'em late-war along with X-turret to free up topweight for more AA?

correct but late 44, so you choose up to 44 with torps or after 44 with AA6 or 7?

I wish I could help. There's an old saying about teaching a man to fish, rather than just giving him a fish. Is there a thread for making cards like yours?
Edit... So there is! I see some skill is required, though.

Why wouldnt the Fuso get Masked Guns..?
The Masked Guns ability is meant to be there to reflect the amid ships turrets - which the Fuso, Ise and Hyuga have.
Also, i think the gunnery value of the Fuso and Ise class should at least be the same as the Kongo class then ADD Masked guns.
After all, same type of guns plus MORE of them should be a benefit somehow.

Hey, admiral_tee!
I thought Masked Guns was based on the Yamashiro catching someone by surprise at close range, but I must've been thinking of some other ship. I can't find anything like that in her story. Brain rot, already.
If Masked Guns is based on the Yamashiro's turret positions, then the Fuso should carry the same SA, of course. For game purposes, they'd be identical. I don't know about the Ise and the Hyuga, though. They were different enough in the arrangement of their upper works to keep us from using the Yamashiro molding, were they not? I'd be glad to add them, if I could get away with it.
Thanks for the help!

Okay, here's Suzutsuki at last. I modified the wording on the Flak Trap ability a little bit, but I hope it's not too big a change.
I also ran into a lot of confusion with this one. It is listed under Akitsuki, but it was part of the Akizuki class, and to the best of my knowledge those were two separate classes. I used the stats from the Akitsuki anyway, though.

No, "Akitsuki"=Akizuki. Richard is treating Conway's as the Holy Bible, and while they're usually right on most things their Japanese transliteration sometimes sucks Texas-sized turds.
When in doubt on IJN, I set course over to Tully and Parshall at CombinedFleet.com myself.

I can not logically understand masked guns
Nor Can I even understand why Fuso has such low gunnary ratings.
She could fire a full broadside just like any other ship, If the fore and aft turrets were abel to fire on the target, so could the midship.
Even if you say they cant, then why would she have less of an attack than Kongo, which had less turrets. Something is really wrong with Fuso, and we should fix it rather than perpetuate it.
Deal away with an illogical SA, and just beef her main gunnary. OR Allow her to split her main gunnary attack on two targerts.
Lots of Turrets : This unit may make 2 main gunnary attacks this turn agaisnt seperate targets. Use x/x/x/x for each attack instead of the one printed above.
Thats a far more useful unit, that is far more historically accurate.
Actually now that I look at it, thats a nice SA. Her, Yamashiro, Ise, Hyuga, All those multi turreted USN early BB's and Agincourt could get that SA. It'd be nice for dealing with lots of little sihps.

10pts seems a little low to me. After all, it has Long lances and flak trap allows for a 13/14 dice AA roll! I'd said closer to 13.
Oh and Chesty, my "Envy of the Fleet" would be for either gunnery or AA...and agreed it would either have to be costed on the high end or only available to non-BB's. My vote would be for the USS San Deigo as previously stated, I believe she had the 2nd most battle stars of the war.

flak trap is way to powerful. even withonly a sub chaser in sector you are putting up 8 dice! a 13-14 die AA roll is entirely too much, for anything less than 20pts.

I agree. Being that the highest AA on the IJN is a 7, this would be 12 dice, or enough to destroy Dauntlesses and Avengers almost every time, but maybe that's what you are looking for. Only being used once per game helps keep it from becoming too powerful. Maybe once per game it can combine both it's own attacks on one target, for 10 dice. That would still make it the most powerful ship-based AA attack, but only one time. Or get a re-roll. Don't get me wrong, I like to shoot down the other side's aircraft, but 12 or more dice is a lot for AA in WaS.

Hey, jfkziegler!
You know, I really should read this post first, every night, instead of saving it for last. Hoist by my own petard!
It figures that debate comes AFTER you make the card. Heavy sigh.
Let me respond to those who are doing the math. It is ripe, stinky cheese and the numbers are supposed to be scary! Once per game. Let the Americans have something to fear, for a change. Please?
I do think the cost should be bumped up to 12 points, though. As more people use it, they're sure to realize that she's more than worth it.
Thanks again!
Edit... A slight, but significant, addition occurred to me....
Flak Trap... Once per game, when you have initiative, if another friendly ship is in the same sector, you may roll the antiair attack dice of both ships against a single target. Antiair Specialist cannot be used on the same turn.
Re-edit... Bold added to show the added part.

Hey, Capt. Strange!
I'm going to update the list this coming weekend. I'm still thinking about the 13 or 14 cost for the San Diego, and how to word the SA so that you don't get to re-roll both antiair attacks. (I assume she'll be keeping Antiair Specialist.) I'll be back.

X would be along the lines of
7/7/6/5
something in that general vicinity. This is less than some cruisers. You're not making two full Main gun attacks. Just half. Against a BB' this wouldn't be too useful, but in a Cruiser or DD swarm this would be a wonderful SA. So it's really not all that powerful, (most cruisers are doomed when a BB bears down on them anyway, if anything, this increases the odds of thier survival)
Any of the 5 < x turret ships could get it. There are some US ships with it, one British, and of course the IJN.

As much as I hate to admit it, we may need an SA like this for some of the late-war American escort cruisers. Always, the Americans!

It will become an issue of. All DD's can be a close escort, but they don't all have it. This would be more reserved for just BB's. There were many many ships with more than 5 turrets. But not many BB's.
Ise Class, Fuso Class, Wyoming Class, and thats it. (it has to be 6 or more turrets, not 5) If you include pre WWII BB's then The British would get one as well, that about it.

Total Edit... The wording includes the phrase "one extra attack die" each, with the emphasis on one. It does not say on all attacks. For instance, you could engage different targets with primaries, and apply the Crossfire to a mutual target with secondaries.

A little from both. Excellent Spotting and Scout Cruiser is all we need. Anymore and you can start adding up the stacks, and eventually you'll break a unit. With crossfire, a gloire can get to an 8 on range 3.
|
jfkziegler
|
Personally, I don't have a problem with a unit being able to use a whole bunch of abilities and potentially being game-breaking, mostly because they all have limitations.
Rapid Fire can only be used once per game. Crossfire requires two ships both firing at the same opposing ship. Excellent Spotting requires another ship to fire first.
Also, many of the abilities are only available to one side. Only the Axis have Scout Cruiser, and only the Allies have Rapid Fire and Crossfire. This helps to prevent too much buildup on one side.
Besides, if the potential to break those abilities leads to people being more willing to play cruisers, then I am for that. It would help balance cruisers with the other classes.

Hey, Rengokuy!
Good point, and it's come up in play testing, so I can't say I didn't see this coming. During play testing, when SA's stacked up, we would just have the player choose one over the other. I know that's not a proper fix, but it worked well enough to play.
Advice, anyone?
|
Diamondback

I'd say it's okay for Gloire to get 8 dice from Crossfire--if you play historical, you're limited to 3 anyway--so 3 Brooklyn/Gloires isn't gonna do a whole lot against a battleship.
Overall for Brooklyn you're limited to 7 (9 if you include St. Louis/Helena; less if you also deploy Boises) anyway, so I think the real worry would be the Brooklyn/Cleveland or Brooklyn/Baltimore pair. Brookyn/Boise Rapid-Fire combo's pretty much a one-shot deal, so I figure it's no biggie.
If combos like this and the Axis "Flank Speed+Establish Screen" get cruisers on the table more, good for them.
|
swarbs
|
You are also limited by points. Taking three pairs of Brooklyn/Gloire's in a smaller point total game is a sizeable chunk of change just for a couple of 8 dice range three attacks.

So...
_ Fiji (14?)
_ Stalwart Antiair, Desperate Antiair? (New SA)
Desperate Antiair... Once per game, this unit can make two Antiair attacks against separate targets during your air defense phase.
Without Flotilla Leader, compared to the Jamaica, I'd suggest dropping the cost a point. Otherwise, she looks good to me.
I like the adrenaline rush implied by Desperate Antiair, and the clean phrasing of the SA. Very nice, thank you!
Edit... AA 6 ?

The only problem that I have with Desperate Antiair is that it is essentially a one-time use Antiair Specialist. Here's a potential solution to that, which portrays the circumstances that I think Desperate Antiair is intended to portray:
DESPERATE ANTIAIR: Once per game, after this unit has been damaged, it may make two Antiair attacks against separate targets during your Air Defense step.

Thanks! I have to say that I like jfkziegler's addition of the "after damage" to the SA, though. It better represents the spirit of it and doesn't overstate the ship's general AA capabilities.
As far as the AA6, I looked back at Conway and I may have misread the blurb regarding Jamaica's AA when I initially did the stats for Fiji. It appears that Jamaica did receive additional Bofors mounts, but this was close to the war's end and after removal of X turret, not at commissioning. So, I guess there's no good reason to downgrade Fiji's AA from 7 to 6.
On a side note, it's nice to have a 1940 UK cruiser with secondaries!

Hey, jfkziegler!
Even I know that CVE's carried some fighters and some bombers, but the mechanics of the game won't allow fractions of squadrons to be used. Not without (gulp) math. So, you put a mini for each squadron on the mini for the CVE. You put an upside-down counter on the squadron that isn't "on deck". Only the squadron "on deck" can be launched.
Gives you options, but doesn't increase the basing. I like the idea.
Edit... How about phrasing it so she can carry both, but only use one at a time? No counter neccessary. Maybe.
|
jfkziegler

But wouldn't sending them off the airbase be just as useful? In either case, you would only get to use it every other turn.

Well, this is turning out to be harder to explain than I thought, so maybe it's not such a good idea, after all. Just so you know what I mean, I'll go ahead and explain it, though.
The Shoho carried Zeke's and Val's, right? Even the St. Lo carried both fighters and bombers. But not enough to add up to a full squadron of each, in game terms. The game doesn't allow for half a squadron. So, what do you do to allow for composite squadron carriers?
My solution was to have both aircraft squadron minis available, but only one in action at a time. (The other one didn't count for anything.) That way, I could swap 'em at the end of the Sea Movement phase, if I wanted. I figured being able to launch a full squadron of one or the other was no more unbelievable than launching a full squadron of anything from one of these little carriers. They didn't carry full squadrons.
It really is a lot easier to do than explain.
Edit... If either one goes down, the ghost squadron goes away, as well.

Okay, but for who?
I would argue that the apparent burst of speed this SA seems to call for is just a matter of misdirection and crafty navigation on the part of the crew.
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to change the name to something more BB specific, or allow it to go after CV's, too?
Edit... Surface first, when it comes to the timing of the SA's. I think. Maybe not, because then the sub could squirt out from under a hunter. Maybe go by initiative?

I personally think it would be acceptable on a Type IX. I seem to recall reading somewhere that there were other German subs that got into position to do great damage to British battleships, but their torpedoes ended up being duds. It might have been in the book on British battleships I am currently reading. I'll have to look for it at some point.

If the sub already gets Elusive Quarry, doesn't that make the Sub Hunter question moot? You could leave out the clause about Sub Hunter, then.

I don't want to add your screen poker SA to the Orphan list, just yet. Maybe jfkziegler will find a surrogate. If not, the U-47 is supposedly coming out in the next release, so we could reserve your SA for the U-331. Since they were sisters and all.
I love the SA, but I should admit that I don't favor the name. Screen Penetrator sounds too surfacy, to me. This is a sneaky hit-man kind of SA that only affects battleships and cries out for a vaguely sinister name, like Battleship Doom or Dreadnought Assassin, or something.
Well, maybe not all that, but it is a pretty cool SA.

Here's what I found, on the U-56:
30 Oct, 1939. One of 4 German U-boats operating west of the Orkneys U-56 locates the British battleships Nelson, Rodney and Hood with 10 destroyers and attacks. Torpedo failure ruins the favorable attack chance.
According to my book, the torpedoes actually hit the Belson but failed to detonate.
Unfortunately, it's an even earlier Type IIC sub.

(I need to get some reference books. Start pulling my own weight around here.) |
Here's what I found, on the U-56:
30 Oct, 1939. One of 4 German U-boats operating west of the Orkneys U-56 locates the British battleships Nelson, Rodney and Hood with 10 destroyers and attacks. Torpedo failure ruins the favorable attack chance.
According to my book, the torpedoes actually hit the Belson but failed to detonate.
Unfortunately, it's an even earlier Type IIC sub. |
Also, HMS Malaya was damaged by an attack from U-106, a Type IXB sub.

Would anyone mind if I suggested U-56 as a forumini unit? Seems like there's two solid SA's right there.

The typical negative S.A. for early-war German torpedoes? Unreliable torpedoes or something else?

Hey, swarbs!
The torpedo failed to detonate and was a dud. Isn't that the same thing?
Edit... What do you think of Battleship Stalker instead of Penetrate Screen?

There's an SA for subs with Unreliable Torpedoes?
Is there one for the early war US subs, with the infamous Mk VI exploders on their Mk 14 torpedoes? Maybe an SA for the dreaded circling torpedo?
More importantly, should any repaints get them?

Hey, jfkziegler!
Thanks for the research! I'll put the U-106 on the reprint list, just in case. Even if swarbs wants to wait for the U-331, the U-106 would still be a good reprint in her own right.

I figured that it could get the battleship one, and could also get the standard forumini unreliable torpedo SA too. But this could be a SA overload problem, so I've held off for a little bit. Should it also get wolfpack? Also, unless I read the stats wrong, it'll be the smallest sub we've yet done, should it get some sort of 'coastal' SA as well?
