New WaS player needs help, BismarckHi there. I just picked up my first packs for War at Sea. I managed to obtain the Bismarck in one of my packs and would like to try the Battle of the Denmark Strait against a friend. We have the Bismarck and Hood. What ships should we use for Prinz Eugen and Prince of Wales, since these ships are not available. Are there any available ships that closely match them that we can use as stand ins. Is there a Denmark Strait scenario available? Thanks.

Admiral Hipper for Prinz Eugen and King George V for Prince of Wales. They are their sisters.

You should also include x2Kents as stand ins for HMS Norfolk and Suffolk... the shadow battleship SA is made for this scenario!

Thanks, I'll try to get a hold of the sister ships you listed above. How would you go about adding Norfolk and Suffolk to a Denmark Strait scenario. Would you have a random chance that the ships appear behind Bismarck/Eugen? I'm not sure how this would play out, but it certainly could be a "what if" scenario. Maybe a three game campaign, Norfolk/Suffolk chasing Bismarck/Eugen then the battle with Hood/Wales and finally the attack on Bismarck by the rest of the British fleet.

First off,
Second, I've been working on a way to do this very scenario, but I haven't come up with much yet. I did, however, do a what-if scenario for a breakout of the German fleet together. It can be found here if you're interested:

Here is how I have done it in the past.
The two cruisers were there in the Denmark straight battle but keeping way the hell out of the gun action, their roll was to shadow and report. I would use them in that way with a match rule that they cannot engage Bismark or Eugen unless either of the former are engaged with a BB/BC. The game ought to be set up with the two cruisers deployed 4 squares away from Bismarck and Eugen on the German Start line with the rule that neither ship can engage or be engaged on turn 1.
So how do they fit into the match?
1. as a RN Objective:
one of the two cruisers must survive the match (keeping within range 4 of Bismarck on the turn she leaves the map)
-25vp for Germany
both cruisers survive the match within range 4 of Bismarck (keeping within range 4 of Bismarck on the turn she leaves the map)
-50vp for Germany
2. as a German objective: one cruiser sunk = her points +30 vp
both sunk = their points cost +60 vp
in this match rather then the three objectives (as used in the classic WAS game) the German player gets +100 vp's for crossing the map.
You can set German victory conditions as follows:
Germany wins if Bismarck crosses map for 100 points and sinks 50 points of RN ships/other VP's
(=150 vp's to win the game)
This way the cruisers can make a real difference without getting into serious gun range, as long as they are held back until the ER is knocked off they ought to have a chance.
The Rn must obviously sink Bismarck for the win, but using the above they could get a DRAW if the negative Vp's taken off Germany for a cruiser or two staying in shadow range when Bismarck leaves the map are subtracted.
It makes it much harder for the Germans, but then Bismark ought to nail hood 9 times out of ten anyway and with the KGV turret SA the Prince of Wales isnt too tough a nut to crack... so giving the Germans a more complex task ought to make the whole game that wee bit more challenging!

First off,
Here is a scenario to look at for the battle:

Additionally, you'll find lots of scenarios here:

and here:

Hopefully these will inspire you!
