Various Newb 100pt Army ListsHi everyone, I've just recently started play aam. (Sorry for posting in multiple threads but I think this one is actually the more appropriate for these sorts of questions.) My starter set and most of my units still have not yet arrived so I have yet to be able to test them. But nevertheless, it would help tremendously if you guys could critique my army lists and provide me with bits of advice as to how to improve upon them. Right now I am mostly focusing upon 1943 and prior. My main enemies will be (most likely) a British infantry and artillery heavy army along with a Soviet Armor heavy army. Maps will probably be those from the starter set initially though that might change to eastern front maps later.
American

2.)
(For Fun, not sure if it'll actually work againist anything)
4 Sherman M4A1 84pt
1 M5A1 15 pt
Total 99pt
Germany:
1.)
2 Panzer IV F2 44 pt

1 Infantry Platoon, 3Kar, 1SS Haup, 1 MG 42, 20
1 SdKfz 251 Halftrack 7
2 Wehrmacht Veteran Infantry 10
Total: 100
Soviet: This is my favorite army that I have because this one is a true budget army- maybe 10 dollars if that. A T34 came from the starter, another I got off ebay real cheap, the Antitank platoons costs next to nothing from dragon justice, I already had PPSH from a booster, the Mosin's were a dollar each) But just looking at it, I can already tell that it will be weak against infantry. I wonder if it can still be effective in the right setting.
1 T 34/76 1941 28pt
1 T34/76 1942 30pt
1 Soviet Antitank Platoon: 2x ZIS-2 57mm Model 1943, 1x PTRD-41 Antitank Rifle, 1x PPSh-41 SMG = 16 points.
4 Mosin Riflemen 12pt
1 Fanatical Sniper 8 pt
1 Commissar 5 pt
1 PPSh 3 pt
Total 104pt
I would welcome any critique and advice that you guys could give. I am not sure how to use artillery properly and the line of sight thing kind of intimidates me (since I don't have many spotters) and any advice in regards to how to use it effectively would be greatly appreciated
I've already gone way over budget so anything changes will have to come from this list.

Nice ideas. You really seem to be getting into the game.
Unfortunately, platoons aren't used any more since the cards were revised and the unit limit lifted. You can, of course, play any way you want, but I just wanted to let you know.

The sherman swarm might work, they are overall (i think) the best tank in the game for price, speed, AT, AI and defense.

I actually want to try out the Sherman rush in a game and see how that goes. I'm actually kind of afraid of being outflanked by either hordes of infantry or by long ranged tanks on the opposing side.
Is it possible to pursue that same strategy with either Germany or the USSR and if so, what would be the ideal army list for that- assuming we are sticking with 1943?
Could the other lists potentially work?

Here's a couple I recommend trying out...
2 Panzer IV F2 - 44
4 Veteran Wehrmacht Infantrymen - 20
German Infantry Platoon - 20
Wehrmacht Oberleutnant - 12
Panzerfaust 30 - 4
If you know you're going up against an American army, I'd take this. You'll most likely face some easy-to-kill tanks for your Panzer IV's, and a lot of durable infantry. The Mausers are good for taking up space and as a placeholder and killing standard units, the Veteran Infantrymen are tough enough to withstand a beating and deliver one back, especially backed up by the Haupsturmfuhrer. You'll want to use the MG 42 to watch their backs as they run to close assault the opposition, or help keep their anti-tank men away from your tanks. The Oberleutnant is great for helping the Veteran Infantrymen out as well, by moving them quicker and giving them a +1 to whoever they attack during angriff.
2 Sherman M4A1 - 42
1 Quad 50 - 10
US Infantry Platoon - 17
1 M5A1 - 15
1 M8 Greyhound
This build is something I haven't fielded, but it is comprised of functional units. The Shermans can fight tanks, obviously. The Quad 50 will defend against air and infantry, or suppress them. The infantry platoon has got a nice variety to it. The M5A1 is awesome, and good in a cover position, as if it becomes disrupted, it can be moved out of line of sight (potentially) so it can recover before suffering the penalty. Flanking is another skill it has, due to its speed and decent hitting power for its size. The M8 is good, speedy back up for infantry, or to protect tanks from close assault.

Today I watched two of my friends play their first game. Some of my most important pieces still have not arrived (Panzer IV F's, and my starter namely) My flatmate had a Soviet Army while my friend tried to play a budget British build. He really needed the Bedford Truck but it was beyond what he was willing to spend so I let him use my 2 M5 Half Tracks and my one Sd KFz 251 Half Track as proxies for the Bedford
Soviet 100pts
1x KV 1 32pts
2x Su 122 44pts
1x Soviet Infantry Platoon 16pts
-1x Comissar
- 4x Mosin
-1x DP 27
1x BA 64 8pts
Total 100pts
vs.
Britain 100pts
3x 17 pounder Anti Tank Gun 39pts
1x Entrenched Anti tank Gun 7pts
3x Bedford Truck 12pts
2x British Infantry Platoon 42pts (21pts each)
In Total that is
-2x Inspiring Lieutenant
-4x SMLE No. 4 Rifle
-2x Vickers Machine-Gun Team
-2x Bren Machine Gunner
Total 100pts
It was quite something to see, it took us a while to figure out the rules- because my starter hadn't arrived, we were using eastern front maps (in some kind of imaginary campaign) along with the rule book in Pdf form. Line of sight was a pain in the arsch to figure out, along with terrain.
But yah, the Soviet Army was a sight to see and kind of what I wanted my German forces (that will eventually arrive to emulate). I don't have a brumbar or anything that could approximate the Su 122 or the KV1 for that matter but it was beautiful.
It was an urban map and the game ended up being a slower than I anticipated. I think my flatmate was intimidated initially by the 17pounders. My flatmate tried to keep his infantry behind his vehicles for cover but that ended up slowing down his movement by too much so he stopped it. Eventually the Soviet friend would lose all his infantry.
Long story short, it ended up being close but my friend playing the Soviets won. Their armor simply ended up being too thick to penatrate at long range and once he got closer, the Su 122's blasts took the 17 pounders out.
After 7 turns, my British playing friend still had a bunch of infantry left. The bedford truck actually ended up playing a big role for him in transporting both men and arti. I actually wonder if a better player could have won with his army list againist the Heavy armor.
In anycase, though I think MY army lists may actually ahve problems with both. I don't have a heavy hitter like the Su 122 and my tanks have much thinner armor. I can't deal with infantry as well as my Soviet playing friend and my armor isn't as good as his (comprising mainly of Stug III G's and Panzer IV F's) I wonder if my Me110 could wreck some havoc among the British forces or if my 75mm arti could as well...
But yah... now that I have a taste of what the army lists my friends are using. I'm starting to feel a bit anxious... I think my Soviet playing friend would use a different army list againist me... I think he might use the Soviet T34 platoon- 78pts for
1x Guards T-34/85
2x T-34/76
2x PPSh-41 SMG
which I think is pretty unbalanced since one T34/86 and one T34 is over 60 pts as it is.
But yeah, it' a lot for me to ponder right now.
What do you guys think? What are some builds for Germany that could go toe to toe with the two armies I listed?
Right now my main heavy hitters are:
2 Panzer IV F2 (trying to get a 3rd one)
2 Stug III G
1 Tiger 1
(Trying also to get a Brumbar)

You have discovered the problems all new players find. You never seem to have enough pieces to really be competitive enough against players with more pieces. they field a different build every time and you find yourself playing the last game for awhile. Don't worry, soon enough you will have way too many pieces and will be able to toss in a few surprises yourself. More plastic, must have more plastic. lol

One old wargamer trick is to cut a long thin rubber band. Then you just stretch it between the center dots of the hexes in question. If the line crosses any part of a hex full of blocking terrain then no LOS.
Or maybe it was just those EF maps with their annoying shadow effects. Whoever thought that was a good idea should be forced to eat EF version SS-Panzergrenadiers.

Yeah it's definitely quite annoying that we need a lot of pieces in order to keep the element of suprise in a 100pt army. But I was wondering what do you guys do for storage? Right now I don't have that many pieces between 80-90 and I was initially thinking of using ziplock bags- 2 for each army, one for infantry and another for tanks. And then maybe a cardboard box or something to keep them all because I want it all to be easily movable.
I know that there are guys on this form that have hundreds or thousands of units and I wonder what they did for storage and to keep the pieces mobile?

Plano boxes are the way to go or really any clear plastic box with moveable dividers will work great. Plano is just the one that is available at most places. Right now I'm have somewhere in the mid 300s of pieces and only about 50 of those are vehicles. I have all these in two Plano model 3750 boxes, one box for Axis (GE and JP) and one box for Allies (US and UK). The 3750 is nice because it has two rows of small compartments across the top of the box and one larger section across the bottom.
I keep my infantry across the top with the dividers set to make 1" compartments. That's 12 compartments. The next row is for mortars, crew weapons, guns and small vehicles. I have the dividers spaced at either 1" or 2" here depending on the units. The bottom row is 4.5" tall and 2" to 2.5" wide so each section is big enough to fit multiples of most vehicles. In one section I have 6 M5 half tracks and a Sherman 105 to give you an idea of what will fit in one of these spaces.
Plano has a big variety of boxes in a variety of sizes to choose from with various size compartments and numbers of dividers. I picked up mine at Target but Walmart has them as well. You can also find Plano products at Lowes and Home Depot. Another popular holder is a small parts holder from Stanely I believe. It's yellow and black. I've seen them at some Target stores and Home Depot as well. Look in the tool box section.

Ah okay, thanks for letting me know. I looked them up on Google and they look great. I was worried about the barrels and such snapping and bending in plastic bags.

My First Game.
Today My starter set arrived and I played my first game with one of my friends. We used map combo 2-3 from the starter set, I played Germans and he picked from my American list. I knew that he would probably use Shermans (since well... I bought all those units and Shermans are just about the only heavy hitters I have.) So I picked the following as my army list
2 Panzer IV F2 44pts
2 Stug III G 38pts
1 Me 110 17pts.
Total 99pts
There is probably a better use for those 18 pts remaining than the Me110, but it's my first plane and I figured that it'd be fun. He ended up picking the following:
4 M4A1 Shermans 84pts
2 Jeeps 8pts
2 Bazooka 8pts
Total 100pts
We're both newbs playing our first game on a fairly big map with plenty of trees in the middle. First turn, he moves a loaded jeep in a bad spot and my Me 110 was able to blow it up. But that was about the almost easy kill I got.
I ended up winning at Turn 6 with both Panzers blown up, a Stug III blown up with only my Me110 and a damaged Stug III remaining. He had lost everything including a damaged sherman that was destroyed by the Me110 shooting at it from the rear (that made me happy)
I found the sherman rush to be pretty scary. I had almost all the right units to deal with it too and it still caused a lot of damage. I had a lot of fun and it was nice not to lose. I maneuvered badly, I advanced my Stugs and Panzers too far forward instead of staying back and trying to take advantage of extended range.
But yeah it's a lot of fun, a bit stressful and very satisfying to win (even in semi hollow victories like my first game )

I started collecting Russians lately and it seems that no matter what army I try to build with my list of units that I always seem to lose.
Tanks:
4 T34/76 1941
1 T34/76 1942
1 Su 85
2 Su 122
2 Valentine VI 16
1 T70-1942 12
Antitank Artillery:
4 ZIS-2 57mm Model 1943
2 PTRD-41 Antitank Rifle
Infantry
6 PPSh-41 SMG
2 Commissar
4 Mosin Nagant
1 DP-27
2 Fanatical Sniper
I tried going tank heavy but then found that I was unable to keep my opponent's infantry from taking the objective once they knock out my Su122's. I tried going infantry heavy and found that enemy planes just pick them off quite easily.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I was wondering if there are some key Russians units that I'm missing (aside from like... a KV-1 or KV-85) that would really help out the list. And if there are strong 100 pt army lists that could be built off the units I have?
