The german sub in indonesia did they help the german wareffort in any way or was they only there to support their japanese allies?

I would say that any time you hurt, harass or otherwise inconvenience your enemy it helps your war effort. Beyond that… I leave the answer to others more learned than I.

They circumnavigated Australia and New Zealand, with a number of sinkings in Australian waters. They were sent to Indonesia to find targets of opprtunity on there travels there as the convoys were not heavily escorted.
They were to also bring back raw materials like pure rubber to germany. I believe Tungsten was exchanged for this. It was too risky to send by cargo ship so they used U Boats for this.

BTW one claimed to have milked a cow from a New Zealand Dairy one night while parked in Hawks bay. (later the captain claimed it was false, but they parked in Hawks bay overnight to recharge in quiet waters)
