i was thinking shouldent you be able to bomb airfields
lotharlutjens

I think that would be a groovy addition to the rules, they have already made a half hearted attempt to simulate that with the SA's from Haruna and Zuikaku but I don't think these rules go far enough.

yeah i think sometime in the future that they let you bomb stratigic bases and stuff

I've played around with trying to come up with rules that would simulate land bases (specifically Iwo Jima and Midway), but they have never worked out to my satisfaction.  I would enjoy seeing such rules if anyone wanted to put the playtesting into them.

An idea that I've been playing with is that you attack an airfield like you attack anything else.  You effectively are attacking the aircraft that are sitting there rearming.  you pick a single stand of aircraft as your target for bombing or strafeing.  I have been using the base size as a measure of how many AA dice can be used against attacking aircraft.  IE. If it is a 5 AC airfield then it gets 5 dice for AA.  if it is a 2 stand AC then it gets 2 dice, etc.  attacking aircraft can be targeted by fighters as normal and attacking bombers can be escorted as normal.
As attacker you also have the option to attack the airfield instead of the aircraft that may or may not be based there.
If you are attacking an airfield then the size of the airfield also indicates the vital armor and it receives the following stats.
IE: 5 cap airfield =  armor 4  Vital armor 5  Hull 3
    4 cap airfield =  armor 3  Vital armor 4  Hull 3
    3 cap airfield =  armor 2  Vital armor 3  Hull 3
    2 cap airfield =  armor 1  Vital armor 2  Hull 2
    1 cap airfield =  armor 1  Vital armor 1  Hull 2
An airfield is rendered un-usable (destroyed) if it sustains any damage in the turn that reduces the hull to zero.   This means that any aircraft that are based there can no longer deploy from it.  It does not mean that they are destroyed just that they can no longer take off.  Keep track of damage just like you do with ships.
If the airfield sustains damage so that the hull is reduced to 1, then only one stand of aircraft can sortie from that airfield per turn.
Instead of sortieing aircraft from a damaged airfield you can attempt to repair one hull point of damage.  At the end of the air attack phase roll 1D6.
If the airfield is a 5 cap then one hull point is repaired on a roll of a 4+
if the airfield is a 4 cap then one hull point is repaired on a roll of a 5 or 6
All other airfield caps repair one hull point on a roll of a 6.
You can only repair one hull point of damage per game however, you may make as many attempts as you want until you succeed, once per turn.  Keep in mind that you cannot sortie from the airfield on the turn you make the repair attempt.

This being said, this opens the feasability of on map airfields that could be attacked by naval bombardment.
