Submerged shot?Anyone else think the Submerged Shot is to much? I feel like the subs in the first two-three turns are trying to trying to kill each other than moving towards the enemy fleet to intercept/interdict them. I don't recall there were that many sub vs sub actions during WW2.
Has anyone played with special rules limiting this ability? Anything from no attacks during the first 4 turns or until the first surface ship vs surface ship engagement?

I've never had a problem with it. It often forces the strategic choice you have to make between going after an enemy ship or a threatening sub, and I think the more strategic choices that are present, the better.

Submerged shot is a necessary ASW tool. So many of our games have shown destroyers and bombers are somewhat fragile, and often the last vessel left on the board is a sub. If you're down to subs vs. cruisers and/or battleships, you have rather aggravating stalemates.

I thought there weren´t that many sub v subs encounters until I started looking into it. There seem to have been quite a few. Subs had to spend a lot of time on the surface in those days.

plus as it states on the netherlands sub's card it sank a u-boat...

So, it sounds to me like we need to beef up surface ASW. Giving any ship with an ASW rating a free second ASW an extra die for every 2 on the card sound too strong?

I'm not convinced that surface ASW needs to be beefed up at all. Surface ASW is hard to pull off, but it's the most effective type of ASW if you can get into position to do it. I think that's as it should be. Overall, the ASW part of the game is fairly well balanced after the rules change.

Agreed, what he said.
The reason it doesn't feel right is in most historical cases DD's were not asked to go sub hunting while taking fire from enemy BBs. Alas, it is what we must do sometimes in this game.

And on top of that a sub in the middle of a surface engagement would just as likely be depthcharged by its own side.

With Sub harassment rules you dont have to sink it to drop it to 1 dice. With ASW units still on the board Subs are not very effective.
