Competitive Japanese army

Hello all!

Does anyone have ideas for a competitive Japanese army in a 100 pt. tourney format?  Is there even such a thing?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

No there isn't unless you draw a map witha LOT of cover. Here's something I just thought up on the spot.

Imperial Seargent x2
Honor Bound Hero
SNLF Fanatic x3
Imperial Sniper
SNLF paratrooper x3
Type 92 machine gun team
Type 3 Chi-Nu
Arisaka Rifle x2

Cheesy? Yes, but you need those infantry.

2 Seargents are good because you do NOT want to lose that Banzai charge. The seargents slug it up with the Arisakas, the fanatics, and the machine gun.
The hero links up with the paras and the Chi-Nu to contest the objective early. The Chi Nu should be used for AT only, don't send it into dangerous situations. If you lose, well it's your fault for playing Japan.

We only really have a chance in historical matches. There really is no perfect army list as you'll need to taylor it to your opponent's tactics, of which the worst in Historical for Japan is the 'Sherman Rush'. To beat that you'll need a really well-built anti-tank army and a LOT of luck. Still it's not impossible. Here are some things I've found helpful;

Machine guns, two is good, three are better.

Sniper, don't leave home without one, but never take more than one either!

Anti-tank guns, always at least two. They're your best hope against allied tanks, just don't forget to cover them well with your MGs.

Ho-ni, mixed results, the mobility can be helpful but basically it's just a anti-tank gun that's easier for Shermans to kill. Good gun though, if you can hide it long enough you can get some use out of it.

Chi-ha/Chi-ru, the only tanks in our arsenal that might kill something, take the Chi-ru if you've got the points.

Ha-go, Really more of a highly mobile machine gun than a tank, effective in that role but personally I'd rather have another regular MG, they're cheaper.

SNLF Fanatic, yes please as many as i can squeeze in.

SNLF paratrooper, don't bother.

Imperial sergeant, Nasty customer and if I'm only getting one officer this is it.

SNLF captain, also good try putting him next to an AT/MG hex you won't be disappointed.

Honor bound hero, not bad but the other two are better, unless you're playing two hundred points or more I wouldn't.

Arisaka Rifle, good filler and the best close combat infantry in the game for the price.

Knee-mortar, only if the other guy's going to have lots of foot troops.

Type 87 Armoured Car, quite possibly one of the most useful things the Japanese have. It can drive the enemy nuts with it's fire and move SA, and if you play it right you can goad them into the AT guns....

Zero if you're light on points, otherwise always go for the George.*

Hope that helps, and remember NEVER play unlimited with a Japanese only build.

Don't use a Japanses army in a competetive tournament Wink

OTOH if your opponents expece German infantry heavy aRMIES YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY; BUT A rUSSIAN BUILD WITH 5/5+ ARMOR RUINS YOUR DAY

Here's a historical build that works:

1x Chi-Nu
1x Ho-Ni
1x Type 87 Armored Car
1x Type 89 Mortar
1x Imperial Sniper
1x Imperial Sergeant
5x SNLF Fanatics

This works against a balanced US force very well. Send the infantry and sergeant after the objective with the mortar and sniper in support. The two tanks should Sherman hunt, but it's best to try to hide the Ho-Ni until the range falls a bit. Use the armored car to harass, remembering to take advantage of it's high speed three and strike and fade 1. Also don't let your Chi-Nu get caught out of cover, it can't stand up to a Sherman in the open for long but with it's forest camouflage it can blaze away for most or all of the battle from the trees.

Almost forgot, if you need air with that, drop the Armored Car and one Fanatic, replace with Arisaka Rifle and Zero. 99 pts the first way, 100 even with the plane.

M2A0 is an employ of WoTC and currently the only official voice that you can see in gleemax. I'm sure he didn't pay for those and I'm even more certain he hasn't played with those Wink.

Just for your info: a historical army build should also consider the proportion of armament available for the japanese army  Idea Arrow

Standard Japanese Division
On 1 vehicle (and not necessarily a tank !), you should place:
2x field guns 75-150 mm
1x 70 mm Light field gun
1x AT 37/47mm gun
16-17 50mm "knee" mortars
17 LMG
5 HMG
35-36 Arisaka rifles (x12 riflemen)

Calculated from: Osprey

Anyone still interested in historical scenarios?  Laughing
Duck Crusader

Yes Sindor, but historical in this sense means all-Japanese and vs US or Brits/Aussies only.

If I'm going to do 'real' historical battles I'm probably going to go to FoW. I love this game, but it's always going to be kind of beer & pretzels.
