Naming Guidelines

As a guideline, a unit named after the equipment should be a straightforward representation of the historical performance.

That works well for planes, artillery, heavy weapons and vehicles.

What about infantry?  Should each country have a standard infantry named after its rifle like the Garand or Mauser?

Or should we name all the infantry after historical formations, one of which will serve as the standard for that country?

Where notable formations (with notable Special Abilities) are concerned, I'd go for 'formation names'. With the standard units that only differ by weapon type, I'd use the weapon.

So, basically a mix of both, where notable formations indicate notable ability.

Different nations used the same rifles. The weapon itself isn't enough, I think.

I think we should make cards to reflect the mini's we have available through AAM. Notice I said mini, not unit cards (Pak 38 card/Pak 36 mini for example). I also think we should have a proxy available or easily modifiable from the available mini's even if it is just a reprint. We can make the greatest card ever for Latvian Unicycle Shock Troops but if no one has a mini for it, it will never get played. When the unit is designed and the stats are debated we should also be thinking about how to proxy that unit and include info on how to modify a mini or a paint scheme for that mini. If it something that is absolutely outside the realm of what AAM offers then I guess suggesting a FOW or other brand mini is the route we will have to go, but as much as is possible I think if we tie this game to the AAM minis we will have a better chance of getting people to play it.

In the forumini olympics though (in 2 months), there will be 16 nations in total, all of which will need to be playable in every year, so we will need many cards for which we don't have minis. For example, biplanes don't have any good AAM proxies, but will be necessary for Poland, Greece, etc. The same for bombers, which is a category that doesn't exist in AAM at all.
Buzzkill

Yeah, that will be tough, I have no suggestions for Bi-plane mini's or bombers.

We can build a list of suggested proxies, but we can also have a stable of icons for online games.

Standard infantry teams could be named after their primary battle rifle, where that rifle isn't used by other nations.  However, where it is (e.g., in the case of Mauser K98's), one could add that nation's word for 'army' or whatever before it.

Representative formations might be too specific for standard infantrymen, although I don't see why they couldn't be used as bases for names of more unique infantry teams.  Here, though, I think it would make sense to specify in the name that the card/model does not represent "the" formation in its entirety.

Finally, I think it would be far too generic to name a unit as "[nation's adjective] infantry," unless we're planning on having only one infantry unit for that nation.
Buzzkill

I am a little lost by the names as well. M1 Garand is named after the rifle, the Germans have Wehrmact Infantry (I agree with Amandil that this might need to be tweaked, he is right, it means Armed Forces. Heer would be more accurate) and the other nations are getting specific units. Shouldn't there be a basic infantry unit for each nationality and then specialty units would be named more specifically? If not, then shouldn't the Garand get a unit name instead of a rifle name. Also, if we go down that road what are the plans for other weapons like smg's and mg's etc.? Named after the weapon or a specific unit? I like the flavor of the unit names, but maybe they should be just that, in the flavor text.
