Mortar vs plane?

Can a mortar unit fire at a plane unit??

Thanks!

I think you can but you would have to roll a 6's in order to get a hit. Plus, you would not get the "Shrapnel" SA. I think.

You would not get the shrapnel, and only 6s would count as successes. But, mortars can attack airplanes, since only units with the "Bombardment" SA can't attack aircraft.

Which mortar?

I would think not...  Standard infantry mortars are high angle artillary pieces used for indirect fire.  They are not designed for direct fire.  In other words you cannot point it, aim it, and shoot it like a rifle or cannon.  They are simply tubes of a specific diameter that has a base attached and stabilizer legs in some cases which adjust elevation and angle.  The Mortar round is then dropped into the tube and gravity takes over...  There is a firing pin in the bottom of the tube which strikes the fireing cap which then ignites the explosive propellant to launch the round.
The round then travels in a high arc and then falls in a general direction forward.  Depending on the fuse timing the round may explode X amount of feet above or may have contact fuses that when the round impacts the ground it hits a firing pin and sets off the explosive.  Mortars have a blast radius with schrapnel.  Some mortar rounds are illumination type white phosphorous parachute types that do no damage...
I say no.  Mortars cannot fire at aeroplanes that are airborne.
If they are still on the ground on the tarmac and not moving for example...  Then yes...

Impossible. mortars can not shoot at planes sorry. Even if the Rules don't clarify it, simply historically they can't.
Mortars have too low a rate of fire and too low a range (height) to affect most aircraft. Even if a plane is flying lower that 50m then to be able to place a round in it direction would be imposssible. I have been on a beach and had a plane fly past at 30m, you can't see it until it is almost over you.

Since when does history matter in this game?

That is what we are trying to fix sharpe

And since when do mortar crews not have small arms of their own?

They do, but they are not nearly as effective as a dedicated AA platform.

Revised rules:
Artillery units without the Antiair special ability can’t attack Aircraft. Problem solved.

Oh yeah, the third guy with the M1 Carbine, of course he is going to shoot down that plane...I actually doubt that any plane could survive that amount of firepower which that third guy with M1 Carbine can throw into the air. Actually Berlin was not defended by flak but by mortar crews which had thier third guy with the G43 constantly shooting up in air knocking out B17s and their escorts.
