Longlance swarm

I gave a this a try tonight with a 100pt fleet. (in a 2 on 2, 200pt battle)

Nachi
Aoba
Oi
Akitsuki
Akitsuki
Isokazi
I-19

100pt even.

Ended up with 14 long lance attacks on turn 2, all from range 2 or 3. The sub got 4 torp shots. All the ships stuck together on turn 1, then fanned out on turn 2 for "aggressive tactics".

The biggest problem is this fleet would be wrecked by any aircraft, but it should eat at least one battleship for lunch. Hopefully, enough survives to take some objectives.
In our case it worked out, but it looks super fragile.

How's this for a concept:

200 point fleet
suppose you suspect your opponent (probably US) is going to bring significant airpower, and you still want to deploy a LL swarm

Soryu
Shoho
3x A6M5
4x A6M2
Aoba
Yahagi
Oi
5x Isokaze
2x Akitsuki

I wonder how this would fare. You could deploy 5-6 fighters per turn (until your carriers go down). A6M5+Soryu might dissuade enemy fighters from strafing (esp. on turn 1 with surprise). Hopefully this number of fighters could defend the carriers and the LL swarm. Or the enemy air might get distracted going after your carriers. Only 10 ships in the LL swarm, but you should have aircover, initiative, torpedo run, aggressive tactics, etc.

Can a US air-heavy build overcome this? Probably but it might be interesting to watch...

(And of course if the enemy doesn't spend a lot on their airpower, then you've wasted a lot of points and will presumably lose...)

For a 2oo pointer I would just run

16 Isokazes
1 Yahagi
1 Akitzuki

Akitzuki and Yahagi stay together in the back row behind the Isokazes while the Isokazes rush forward.

I agree, the Isokaze needs to be the mainstay in a long lance swarm, since it is the cheapest DD that gets two torps at range three, and, being a destroyer, it can't be targeted at range 4-5. The initiative bonus from the Yahagi certainly helps too.
