Kursk, the Nothern Pincer

the battle of Ponyri, 8th July 1943.

On the morning of 8th of july, all the commanders of 9. Armee are warned of a pending soviet offensive North of Orel. Generaloberst Model in charge of the german Nothern Pincer decides to put most of his exhausted panzer troops into reserve. At Ponyri, the focus of both belligerents, the 18th panzer division had to fend off no less than 11 soviet counter-attacks supported by tanks. Despite these bad news XXXXI Panzer-Corps is ordered yet again to take the village of Ponyri where battles reminiscent of the first World War have just taken place, the local school and train station changing hands several times during the day.
In the lead for this last attack: the 292nd infantry division supported by the last operational Ferdinands...

Half hexes are in play for this scenario.

Place a school tile on hex b42a
Place a train station tile on hex b34x
and place a windmill tile on hex b21a
All this hexes are considered town hexes for battle resolutions.
Finaly place a bunker on each of those hexes.

These 3 hexes are the objectives, please note that the school starts in german hands.

Ok, this looks awesome and tons of fun, just what I expect from your work.  I'll have to give it a play this week and post an AAR (in between my own scenario work and learning how to play AT-43).  It seems like every time I turn around you have another scenario out.  Where do you find the time?

hello!

i usually read my books during my afternoon break. Then think about it while working and after work (most days) i playtest at night. I always have a map out (wish there were more...) so its always an ongoing thing.

i've got a line up kind of ready for Hill 112 but this week i'm having a go at red baron's operation adjacent. the map is just great!

So you've guessed it i dont sleep much. Cool

I just bought a LOT of japenese units on e-bay so i might have a go at a US vs Japan scenario in the future. That's gonna be a lot of work (and reading) as i'm not a pacific specialist. Do you still have a scenario in the pipeline on this scene?

My own ambitions for a Saipan scenario have been stymied since my 'cartographer' went missing.  I've put that on the back burner while I work on a short scenario and a trio of play variants, which I planned on having up a month ago.  I suffer from a shortage of hour in the day and have taken to working on my scenarios while at my job when time permits.  I put playing scenarios and posting AARs, updating and other mod stuff first to facilitate the other scenario designers and give them feedback where I can.  I am also in the process of getting the resources together to try out Redbaron's scenarios so I can give some feedback of my own.

Well I finished this scenario with a rather convincing win for the Soviet Union.  I rather enjoyed the set up that put the two forces right up against each other.  It was a brutal smash mouth scenario that emphasised close quarters fighting.  My impression was that the Soviets had brought some of the better tools for this type of scenario, but the forces were well balanced overall.

The combination of Grenadiers and PPsh units quickly took their toll on the mauser firing line.  While I admit I misused the German flamers that might have put a bigger dent in the Soviet defenses.  I set up both sides as close to each other as possible to ensure that the first few rounds would be decisive and for the Soviets to keep pressure on the Germans to keep them from mounting a credible offense for the other two objectives.  Turn one saw about 50% losses on the fourth row for both sides, but the dice were not with the Germans and several key units failed to succeed on their attack rolls.  On the armored front the Soviets going first on turn one drove the T-34s up the west side of the map away from the anti-tank forces that I had perhaps foolishly grouped on the other side of the map.  

The Germans of course countered and I soon found that the soviets had no credible answer to the Ferdinand.  However, the panzers while holding a distinct advantage were slow to wear down Soviet armor, eating up precious turns.  With the German infantry forces evaporating quickly, it would be up to the unscathed Ferdinand to brave the anti-tank guns which stood on each southern objective.  I had set them up there precisely to prevent a tank rush.  The Ferdinand had to take it's chances, but by turn 7 the German infantry had been long gone and the Soviets now occupied all three objectives, making a successful rush moot.  I tried anyway, and sure enough the Ferdinand wound up disrupted from point blank fire on it's rear.  I'll try this with friends some time and see how I can switch up German tactics to improve their odds.
