cool. This is the force that hunted Bismark am I corrct?
Diamondback

This is everything deployed on both sides, from when Bismarck first set sail right up to her destruction.

Every single British ship and plane (including American-crewed Lend-Lease PBYs) released for the hunt and in the Denmark Strait fiasco, and every single ship and sub the Germans either intitially sortied with Bismarck, prepositioned to refuel her or scrambled to her assistance.

U-556 had particularly close ties to Bismarck being built on the adjacent slip and even borrowing the BB's band at launch (her skipper had some propaganda printed for both crews, including laughably a cartoon showing the little sub towing the BB), and ironically found herself with textbook firing solutions at IIRC Rodney and another ship at opposite ends--but no torpedoes left to fire!

SA for Repaint Reference, maybe?
Bismarck Support: If a friendly Battleship named Bismarck is deployed, this Submarine gets +1 die to Torpedo attacks.
Out of Ammo: When this unit attacks, roll 1d6. On a 1, this unit may not attack this turn.

Thanks! Ill play that scenairio sometime, see if the ghermans win!
jfkziegler

I like the Out of Ammo special ability, although it's sort of a strange one.  Theoretically, you could have enough ammo to attack on turn one, then run out of ammo on turn two, and then have enough ammo to attack again on turn three.

I am not crazy about Bismarck Support, because I try to avoid special abilities that name a specific ship.  What about calling it Battleship Support and having it work whenever a friendly Battleship is deployed?
Diamondback

Yeah, but "on 1, this unit may not attack for the rest of the game" seems excessive.

Good point about "BB Support"--unfortunately, we're now looking at a 4-SA unit when you add Audacious Attack and Wolfpack.
jfkziegler

Why not drop Out Of Ammo?
Diamondback

Better to drop Wolfpack, come to think of it. The "I'm using Audacious Attack--whoops, out of ammo! *sails away with tail between legs*" was key to why 556 didn't chalk up a BB and a CA kill that day.
jfkziegler

That seems reasonable.
jfkziegler

I assume she would be a U-510 reprint?
Diamondback

For game purposes, as far as I'm concerned all the subclasses of Type IX are covered by 510 and 66, and the Type VII subclasses are covered with 47. (Differences are so negligible that in game terms all VII's are identical to each other, and all IX's except the IXD minelayer ditto.)
jfkziegler

I have her as being a Type VII, though, according to Conway's, and not a Type IX.
Diamondback

So do I--oops, she's a U47 reprint.
jfkziegler

Here she is:

Poof!
Diamondback

???

And, IIRC, 552 was Korvettenkapitan Topp's ride.

Thanks for writing this up.  The Hunt for the Bismarck is one of the few scenarios I've wanted to play since this game came out.  The other has been a relatively accurate portrayal of Midway.
Diamondback

Scenario? Who said anything about scenario? This is only an Order of Battle--there are no special rules to make a scenario in this yet, aside from JFKZ's custom-card for U556.

Gimme some time and I'll get Midway next.

Yes but this provides a strong foundation to jump from in order to construct a usable scenario.  You make it possible.  Smile

High five!

I have also been interested in the Bismarck-Hood battle since the beginning. I like the new sub card and the out of ammo makes sense. However, do you think it should take effect after at least turn three or four? This way at least the unit isn't totally handicapped and you get some use out of it if the negative SA takes effect.
I have to agree with the original Bismarck Support idea rather than the change to battleships in general. However, it would be the first unit in the game with such a unit-supporting specific SA and it would limit its benefit to the Bis, leaving it out if a player chooses another German BB.
So, now to making the Bismarck Scenario... sound like a contest idea- who can make the best "Sink the Bismarck" scenario? It would have to be historically accurate but also a high fun factor. I made a very accurate scenario that put me to sleep...
Also, check out the Sink the Bismarck! Minigame if you are bored...
