Flames of War Hell's Highway

Just wondering if any FoW players have picked up Battlefront's latest book offering. I always picture Michael Caine at the lead of the Irish Guards up the road into the Netherlands, since watching A Bridge too Far on DVD. Anyhoo I'll be picking it up this weekend. By the way the Challenger looks pretty dang formidable but as I understand it all the kinks in its design had not been ironed out. Salut y'all!

I'm in the same boat as you, picking mine up on saturday.  A Bridge to Far is one of my favorite movies (I'm a Michael Caine junkie as well as WWII...) been waiting for this book for quite some time.

Not heard of it, but i'm in! Cool

Love the movie, love the actor.

As good as Michael Caine's performance was, Gene Hackman's portrayal of a pessimistic Gen Stanislav Sosobovski was an Oscar worthy performance. "Christos! Gheneral Browning what of the Ghermans!" "Just checking to see whose side your on!" "GOD BLESS FIELD MARSHAL MONTGOMERY!" (Dripping with sarcasm) Man so many quotes so little space.

It was off the top wasn't it? Too busy with other projects right now to get one myself, but I'll look over the shop's copy.

My favortite part was when the germans ask for surrender and the brits tell them to. I cant remember the exact quotes though.

Tell him to go to hell.

I'm very sorry, but we can't accept.

What?

We haven't the facilities to take you all prisoner, sorry. Was there anything else?

Pretty close...

It gets watched every month or two when I'm painting WWII stuff, now rotated with Letters from Iwo Jima and Tora Tora Tora in my playlist for such. Ancients/mideval is either Kingdom of Heaven, the 13th warrior, or the old classic 300 Spartans (NOT 300). Fantasy it's either the sort-of LOTR movies or the mummy movies (the first two). Sci-fi either Star Wars or one of my huge collection of oriental sci-fi/anime. Everything else it's Beau Geste, Gunga Din, the origonal Four Feathers, Legionerre (Van Damme's ONE really good movie) Or the two ZULU movies.

Duckie, our taste in movies/DVD collections are almost identical...

FTR, the 2 Zulu movies are my absolute favorites.  Mom use to get so mad at sunday dinner when my brothers, myself and father basically would reinact the whole dialogue at the table. Laughing

Zulus sir, fashends of 'em.

Lieutenant John Chard: If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle.
Colour Sergeant Bourne: And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind.

Ah yes Zulu. Michael Caine's breakout role. Yes its among my favorites of his along with The Man who Would be King, The Eagle has Landed, and Second Hand Lions.

Back to Hell's Highway I was unable to get it last week as my LGS hadn't gotten it in by the the Battlefront release date of last Saturday. The ladies at the LGS gave me a call last Wed. and said it was in so I'll pick it up today. Can't wait for the  Bridge too Far book to be released next month. Anyhoo Salut y'all!

Alright, after looking it over this weekend I have the following report.  I must say I'm not really that impressed.  The quality of the book itself, like most Battlefront publications, is topnotch.  Great artwork, photos etc.  At exactly 80 pages it's a little on the short side but what can ya do.  It does give nice background info on the various armies.  Which included both the Welsh and Irish guards, 101st & 82nd airborne as well as a hodgepodge Fallshimjaeger list.  Which brings me to my main negative point...the German list.

Using the lists provided I think you'd have a hell of a time winning with the Germans.  Besides the German section of the book is @12 pages.  The list seems short, rushed and somewhat contrived.  The only thing that caught my fancy was the penal battalions (which gamewise suck) and the Herman Goering Division Panzer III trainees.  I'll go into more detail later alas real life, and my job beckons...
