Fiat G.50bis A/N "Freccia" (Done)

Since it seems there is great interest in finding another carrier-based aircraft for the Italians I nominate this one that was actually planned and a prototype built and tested for carrier operations. The Fiat G.50bis A was the two-seater fighter-bomber land-based variant. The 'A/N' was the navalized version with a tailhook. One prototype of the A/N was built and tested in 1942.

Here are some links:

"The final prototype was the G.50bis A/N, a two seat fighter bomber intended for operation on the aircraft carriers Aquilla and Sparviero, conversions from merchant ships which were never completed. Test flown for the first time on 3 October 1942, production G.50bis A/N aircraft would have been armed with four 12.7 mm (0.50 in) machine guns and carried a 551 lbs (250 kg) bomb."

I am not an 'aircraft' guy so any help is welcome.

Raw statistics (For the Fiat G.50bis A/S):

Fiat A.74 RC38 radial engine - 838 hp
Length: 7.79 m, Width: 10.96 m,  Height: 2.96 m
Weight: 1975 kg, Max. Combat Weight: 2706 kg
Max. Speed: 484 km/h (301 mph) at 5,000 m
Ceiling: 9835 m (32,367 ft)
Range: 1000 km (621 miles)
MG: 2 x 12.7 mm (0.50 in) Breda-SAFAT machine guns

A/N Fighter-bomber variant
2 -seater
4 x 12.7 mm (0.50 in)
Bombs: 250 kg (551 lb)

I think we can safely assume performance would be degraded by the addition of a second crewmember and a bomb load. But by how much? It probably had the 1,000 hp Fiat A.76 engine which increased speed to 329 mph in the single-seat, non-bomber variant. So I think we conservatively say the new engine just managed to maintain the performance of the plane with the older engine.

Overall it is a little slower than the Re.2001CB, a little shorter ranged, but has slightly more powerful machine guns. I think it would make a nice 'lower cost' option to the Re.2001CB.

I have a ref for a 250kgs bombs payload too.

Speed would be around 17.  I can't find a photo of the A/N, but here's a photo of a typical G.50.

So does this look okay?

This is a picture of the G.50bis A/S which is supposed to be the same as the G.50bis A/N except for the tailhook.

Sweet.   Very Happy

WWII Color pic of a G-50bis AS

And now for your delight! here you are a pic of a G.50 A/N prototype

you can see the prototype tailhook not under but on the bottom left of the tail.

Fantastic photos!

So what would you prefer? A B&W photo or a color painting? I generally prefer artwork over photographs just for aesthetic reasons. But in this case I might favor a photo of the actual protoype even if it isn't as pretty. Thoughts?

The tail hook is convincing.  Clearly a carrier bird.   Very Happy

The photo of the prototype is superb! I didn't expect something like that on the internet.

Cost ? - 8?
Speed 17  - AGREED
AA: 6   - AGREED
Bomb: 7   - AGREED
Armor: 5/7/1   - Due to the awful manoeuvrability as a result of the additional crew member
SA: Mission Selection  - AGREED

Speaking of an additional crew member, where would he sit? The B&W photo doesn't have space for a second person.

I wondered that too. The only double-cockpit version I can find it the trainer variant. It does seem to have a big, fat fuselage so maybe the navigator is behind and below the pilot? Or maybe the information on two people is incorrect and confused with the trainer.

Thanks for the review! I will make the change.
NeuralDream

It is rather suprising to see a two-seater version. I am not aware of any other single-seater modified into a two-seater for fighter-bombing purposes. It seems excessive.

This is the final stats then.

Just need an official cost from RAEVSKI

NICE!

Compared to 2001 points are 7

Thank you!
weedsrock2

Please review. This should make a nice lower cost alternative carrier aircraft for the Italians.

Sir_Valentine

Great little card... looks good weeds.

Thanks guys!

Locked and loaded.
