conflict of Heroes or Memoir 44?What game would you recommend?
I already have battlelore and I am told the mechanics are quite similar for M44
I know CoH (as mentioned in a thread below this one) uses card board chits, I don't really care, just want a fun easy to understand rule set that has good replay value.
If I want to use minis I guess I can always adapt my own shhhhhtuff to it.
is there a point system in Conflict of Heroes?

I own memoir, its very popular in france but i'm not too keen on it.
As for conflict, havent found it yet but it looks great.
From my informations i would say that memoir would be more simple and uses minis while conflict looks more like a streamlined and upgraded squad leader with great looking maps.

'44s exactly the same, only with WWII units.

Here's a recent thread on Conflict of Heroes:
http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about9758.html
Memoir is similar to Battlelore. They are both by the same designer and are both part of the Command and Colors series of games. The rules are very similar and Battlelore actually has a few additional nice rules compared to Memoir '44.
Conflict of Heroes is in my opinion awesome but it is closer to an old school hex n counter wargame so you'll have to decide if that is what you are looking for. I think in the above thread I provided a link to a PDF of the rules. Download them and look them over first and see if the game is for you.

I know, as I mentioned it in my post.

Again, I mentioned that in my post.

As I said in my most, I am fully aware of no minis, and do not care as I am looking for a fun new system to play.

Does M44 use bazooka units, something similar to AAM?
or is there a variety of units like AAM
BAR gunners, bazookas, MGs, M1s, etc.
Battlelore has a nice variety of various weapons, bows, cross bows, spears, swords, etc.

Memoir uses no specific units. The only units are generic infantry, artillery and tanks. That's it. The only exception is one stand alone scenario that you can buy that comes with a half dozen Tiger tanks. Battlelore has more different unit types.

I wasn't referring to the fact it has no minis, more to the level of difficulty of the game. You mentioned wanting a fun easy to understand rule set that has good replay value. In my opinion the game is a blast but that's just an opinion. Easy to understand is also understood differently depending on the person. Compared to the old Squad Leader and many other old school wargames CoH is probably easier to understand and teach. Compared to Battlelore CoH is probably a couple steps up in complexity. Get the PDF of the rules and see if it fits what you are looking for. As for replayability, I'd say it's quite good. Keep in mind that this is a scenario driven game. The game comes with nine different sccenarios and more are available on the publishers website.

I also own both games, all the Mémoir '44 extension, but they all gather dust since Early 2008.
Now, I am at my 15th game of COH and making adjustment to mini's. Since I own the Hotzmat 2" and 3" maps I can reproduce the scenario included in both Booklet of COH games.
If you want to go with COH, I suggest that you pick the second box, CoH: Storms of Steel. All the rules have been upgraded and are more fluid in the making.
With CoH: SoS you get many tanks and infantry from both German and SS formation, plus a nice variety of Russian troops. Not everything is there, but what was the most frequently use in Kursk.
My technique to use minis is simple. I got one tank, lets say a Panzer IV Ausf. G, that stand on the table, and the chit is under. The other variant is 2 Pz IV Ausf. G, on on the table free of chits, the second aside but visible for both players, sitting on the chits information. Whenever I activate the unit, on board or aside, I put the chit counter on top of the tank and flip it over whenever the unit have spent is Action Points.

Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel

I remember hearing/reading that Memoir 44 with the Air Expansion is a totally different game than Memoir 44 with all the other expansions.

Still looking to trade his like new Memoir 44 for Risk 2210, can sell too.

Both are well design, but the second grinding, SOS as all the rules updated. You can also get AtB and download the rules on the Academy Games Website

Both are essentially the same in many regards. Storms of Steel adds more vehicles and aircraft. That means you'll also have more rules to digest since aircraft and anti-air were not covered in Awakening the Bear. But it's still the same rule system so you are learning the rules piece by piece.
As for the rules, Storms of Steel uses the same rules and includes all the errata that was introduced with Awakening the Bear. Errata has not come out yet for Storms of Steel but I'm sure there will be some changes and fixes coming along soon so no matter which game you choose you'll likely end up printing out revised rules.

I finished reading the rule book.
Pretty cool set of rules.
Only thing I am not a fan of was the hidden movement which I can always just throw out.

Hey, rey
are you planning on buying this game?
Because I was.
Not that there is a problem with both of us buying it...

I'm leaning towards so. Not entirely sure yet. Need to read the rules and stuff to get a better feel. If I was going to order it, I plan to buy it from:
http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_...f%20Heroes:%20Storms%20of%20Steel!%20Board%20Game
They give free shipping on boardgames over a $100. Wasn't sure about getting a second game to go over the $100. If I do order it and you haven't purchased it yet the do you combine the orders to get free shipping?
In any event this Wargames section is killing me with all these neat games coming up.

Is there some sort of point system for the game? To play pick up games? Or is it just scenario based?
Don't remember seeing anything in the rule book.

anyone confused about the opportunity action? When you are the active player it seems like it is just a typical activation.
How many times can a player use the opportunity action each turn?

Everything is open base. The fact that scenario have been written does not mean nothing can be change.
Honestly, point base, like AAM, it is feasible without a doubt.

Without playing the actual game, but only reading the rules, it is a little confusing. You really need to do a FTF game and gradually include all components.
I am at my 25th skirmish game and played about 18 with only infantry. Tanks are fun, but move really fast, it change most of my tactics. Next step is to include Planes.

How to make easier to learnJJ... as of the other.
If you want to try the game, and that for free. Do the next step:
A) Download the latest rules: CLICK HERE - for the latest rules (Zip & Pdf format)
B) Download the first scenario of AtB: CLICK HERE - Firefight 1 - Partisans (Zip & Pdf)
C) Download the map need for the 1st Scenario: CLICK HERE - Planning map - Plains (Pdf)
The Planning map is small, but it will give you the opportunity to play the game. The scenario list all the unit involve in the skirmish, so print out the pdf files and your good to play.
I suggest downloading the summary sheet: CLICK HERE - Summary Sheet
For the track chart, it can be written aside or print out from an enlarge version of the pdf book or use this version
Just get some solo games under the belt and obviously one other opponent who loves WWII to get it rolling.

I have been told there will be some sort of point system in the works by the creator that will be released down the road. I hope it will be sooner rather than later for those fun quick pickup games.

played a few games so far.
pretty fun. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.
Great mechanics and art work.
Things that lowered its score mostly was the updates of icons on the counters from the first game to the second game as well as some stat changes. Hard to keep up with remember all the tid bits. They will be releasing updated counters from set 1 in the polish box set.
The rules them selves are great. Its just a matter of remember all of them. Not difficult to understand, just hard to remember everything.
example: Wheeled vehicles add +1 AP to movement into a hex with other vehicles.
The best part of the game, the 1 unit at a time activation removes a lot of turtling that went on in Axis and Allies.

You've never heard of the term?
It is a popular term in both war games and video games, especially in turn base games and fighting games.
It's a defensive move, but to me just makes games longer, tedious and frustrating.

what kind of defensive move? like not playing? walking away for lunch and not coming back?
this is why chess is played with a timeclock

Putting out your units in the movement phase ready to fire in the attack phase.
Then pulling them all back during the combat phase behind terrain.
Or just holding them back and waiting for the other player to go out in the open (Mexican stand off)
Reason I quick AAM. A 200 point game takes about 3 hours, sometimes more.
Reason why AAM should have had off board heavy artillery so you can at least flush them out.
WaS does not suffer too bad from this with aircraft and subs.
Only case it happens is with extended ranges, a ship keeps on moving back and back.
Made a house rule that a ship only looses extended range when it is crippled.
