From what I've read, it is a game that you can replace the chit with FOW base squad and tanks... nice.

You were too fast for me. Here's my reply from the CC thread:
I already wrote a review on that game for the ForuMini Olympics competition. Here's the link:

looks like the image links are dead but the text is all there. It even won me first place in that show down!

Yeah, I still got 60 words a minutes... back from the school classes.
So, in your point of view...
COH or CC...
What would be the easiest to teach around?
Component wise... quality wise...
Thanks

CoH without a doubt! It's an amazing piece of work. There are a lot of similarities. Both are squad/platoon level games. Both have some really innovative mechanisms. Both are fairly easy to get new players into. Both don't take forever to play (2, 3 maybe 4 hours per game). Lots of nice stuff in both.
But CoH doesn't have that weird 'oh I don't have the right card so I can't shoot or move or whatever.' I see where the designer was going with the idea. War is hell and not everything goes as planned. But CC is just a little too chaotic. I mean, I want to still have fun playing the game, right? Sitting around waiting for a card just isn't fun. It works in Memoir '44 but in a much heavier game like CC it just wasn't appropriate IMO.
Also, CoH has vehicles. Big bonus!
| Quote: | | What would be the easiest to teach around? |
CoH. CoH without vehicles is a pretty easy game. The first couple scenarios have the same type of programed rules that the old Squad Leader had. You only need to read the rules for the parts of the game that you are going to play. And then with each new scenario you play you just read the additional rules needed for that section. It's a great way to learn how to play.

CoH by a mile on this one. It's got almost as many maps as CC but these are mounted on nice 1/8" thick cardboard. The counters are all mounted on the same thick material as well. And the counters are HUGE, 1" (25mm). The artwork on the maps is better as well IMO. All for just about the same price!

According to an interview from earlier this year here is the proposed expansions that are in the pipeline:
Allied Airborne Battles: D-Day 1944 in 2009
In 2010, we will see both Under Burning Skies: Afrika 1942 and Operation Mercury: Island of Doom.
Apart from those full games, there will be some counter packs featuring units from Poland, Finland and Romania.
Also there are a number of firefight scenarios that are in the works apparently which will be playable solo. They are being designed by John Hill who was the designer of the original Squad Leader. There are quite a few firefight scenarios available on the Academy Games website:
http://academy-games.com/
Here's info on the Poland expansion:
This expansion will include 2 new map boards (again, very different layouts), hundreds of counters, a firefight/campaign book, and a rules sheet covering cavalry and other special Polish, German, and Soviet units.
This will not be a stand alone game, but is an expansion for AtB and SoS. (You can use the cards and misc counters from either game).
Most of the firefights will use the counters and boards supplied with the expansion. We will also add firefights that utilize boards from AtB and/or SoS.
and here's some neat info on the name of the expansion:
The Polish minister of Foreign Affairs, Józef Beck, had a famous speech in Sejm on 5th of May 1939, in answer to Hitler`s ultimatum from 28th of April.
He said:
"Peace is a precious and a desirable thing. Our generation, bloodied in wars, certainly deserves peace. But peace, like almost all things of this world, has its price, a high but a measurable one. We in Poland do not know the concept of peace at any price. There is only one thing in the lives of men, nations and countries that is without price. That thing is honour."
Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Józef Beck, 5th of May, 1939.
So we decided to call the expansion "Price of Honour - Poland 1939"
Looks like they have lots of very cool stuff in the works!

I am quivering at the sight of a Kreta expansion. This is a tough theatre of operation to represent. Many other games have failed to deliver the blow.

Fresh out of the box...
The Two games... WOW.. just WOW. Like it was said here and in many reviews, the components have no equal on the market period!

Ok... Some solitaire games under the belt already.
Really simple to master, the rules, I must say.
I've tried with my 10 year old girl... and, even if she was catching most of the rules as I was reading... the tactics is a precedent for here. She is good with card games, name it, but whenever troops, tanks and LOS are involved, she is lost.
It takes more than 10 minutes to put a full turn in process.
Summary of the Action Phase
The active player either begins taking actions or passes. If he passes, his opponent becomes the active player. The active player may take any of the actions listed below, in any order.
Unit Activation
Activate one unused unit and take one action by spending its allocated action points (APs). A player may activate only one unit each time he is the active player (exception - group activation 9.1). Mark the activated unit as used after spending all of its APs.
Opportunity Action
Take an opportunity action with any unused unit that is not currently activated. Mark the unit as used after it has taken its opportunity action.
Command Action
Take a command action with any used, unused, or currently activated unit by spending command action points (CAPs). The unit is not marked as used by taking a command action.
Play an Action Card
Play an appropriate action card on any used, unused, or currently activated unit. The unit is not marked as used by playing the action card.
After each action the active player takes, the reacting player
may take an opportunity action, command action, or play an
action card (he may not activate units however).
Pass
Once the active player passes, the action phase is
immediately over and his opponent may not react. Flip any
activated unit to its used side. The opponent now becomes the
active player and begins an action phase.

COH boardgameI reviewed the rules and contents of a fellow gamers copy a few months ago. I was impressed with the system but never got to try it out. I believe he sold off his copy, he offered it to me but I was low on funds and had to pass.
The damage results of being fired at and hit are random and I think this turned him off the game altogether. I think it was a good simulation and added to the fog of War as they say.
Just cause you shoot at the enemy does not mean they either are hit or not hit. The random aspect of damage results is not even revealed to the attacker, so it keeps them guessing as to the combat effectiveness of there target.
Please review your playtesting a bit further for the rest of us I for one am interested.
I think this system will catch on in a few years and we may see it played at local conventions and game shops.

FNG, I got a friend coming by tomorrow night (Friday), we will test out all the rules, tanks also.
As you mentioned, the hit are not necessarily showed to the opponent, but I will not include that aspect tomorrow, for the ease of learning all the curves.

How big are the hexes? Could you fit 10mm minis in them?

That is the only drawback I can see in this game... the hexes... 1", like the counter. I thought they would be 2", like the V1 Maps of AAM... But now I can play with my 30 maps of ASL.
I see the point of doing 1" maps... big scope in mind. Kursk is the second grinding of COH and demanded distance to establish any kind of vehicle warfare.
In the same manner, the 1" hex map do not render easy the task of the terrain feature, like woods, brush, because the Chit themselves cover the entire hex, and that is without counting the "hit" counter that goes under the "hit" unit.

Um, so it'd have to be micro-armor. Bummer. Thank you.

I've seen many pictures taking with FOW tanks and mounted squad... this is the solution... get 3D with all the COH rules. That is certainly what I will do after being comfortable in rules manner.
The Card deck can change the entire game, but gives a larger spectrum in the end

Might try that. I just can't get excited by 2D anymore. It does look like a good game.

Up to know it is, IMO, the most effective Tactical game I have seen... better than ASL, because it does not bring excessive rules into play and rely on fast action/reaction.
I was like you about the 2D, but whenever a mechanics so well integrated and intelligent caught you, you have to stick to it.
I will certainly add the 3D in a week or so, count on me.

ya, I just got this game about 2 weeks ago after reading the review from a forum member. It looks great and I was going to use v.1 AAM minis on top of the counters for a more 3d feel.
I haven't played it yet but seems everyone likes it, hopefully someone in my area is willing to take it up.
If you find a way to have an online game I'm interested in testing it out.

Even the V1 vehicle are too big, that is a shame. I will have to open well classified boxes to find my GHQ mini back from the late '80 when I was playing ASL Deluxe.

Like I said for this game, almost nothing as to be done to accommodate miniatures... but take a look at what I found for the Author:
| Uwe Eickert wrote: | | Our future releases, especially the Civil War Series, are being designed from the ground up to accomodate miniatures play. We will also be posting a Conflict of Heroes miniatures rules version on our website for free in the future. |
So, this is a game that will change to way Mini's are played.
I am fascinated by the rules.
It is really fluid.

Not really, people have been adapting board and bookcase games to minis for years. I've got a panzer leader/panzer blitz set-up rigged for 10mm with a bigger map.

I've been doing that with other games too, but what is really interesting is seeing the designer adapting at this moment his game... It was in the process I guess, because plastic/pewter is attracting on a table.
What I was saying, more precisely, is that the game mechanics will be fun to play, more than AAM IMHO, with all the simple, but effective, rules implemented in COH (the Card for the fog of war, the Hidden hit counter).
