Clubhouse Theater League Suggestion

Hi all,

The Theater League is about to start, and I would love to see more participation from a broader cross-section of the forum. From recent polls it seems for a large number of foruminians the historical nature of the game is what drives them the most. For these reason, I am proposing an addition (not a change) to how matches can be played during the Theater League.

Everyone has put a lot of effort into defining the various units that were seen in their specific club's theaters. We have some of the best and most comprehensive lists on the forum for people interested in historical engagements, or "what-if" theater-specific battles. The clubs are named "Theater Clubs", yet that is where we leave history at the door and bring in fantasy.

In the current setup Club Med Italians can play against Club Pacific IJN, but NOT against Club Med British/US. The Theater Clubs are set up in a way where we cannot duplicate battles that took place in the Theaters - instead (unless your club shares significant overlap with another), we get fantasy engagements. This is not a bad thing, but I feel we can have so much more.

So this is my proposal (although not my original idea, the credit goes elsewhere): There can be two types of Theater Club matches - each counting equally, no preference given to one over the other:

1) Global Match: The current system. You play a fleet from your Theater Club against a fleet from a different Theater Club.

2) Theater Match: You and your opponent each play a different fleet from ONE theater ("play in the theater") - either your theater or your opponent's theater. To play in the theater one of the two players must be a member of that Theater's Club. Members of the same Theater Club cannot play against each other.

E.g., I play Club Frozen Seas Germans, while my opponent (Club Pacific) plays Club Frozen Seas UK. Alternatively, against a Club Pacific opponent, I could request to play Club Pacific IJN while my opponent takes Club Pacific USN. No matter what theater you're playing in, a win is still a win for your club.

Why do I think this is a good idea?
 1) It will draw more people to the Theater Clubs - both historical gamers from outside the clubs, and Nation Specific gamers who, for example, haven't joined a theater club because they like playing USN v. IJN only.
 2) It will expand the options of available matches while keeping, nay DEFINING, the flavor of the League. The Theater League's unique historical flavor will be logically expanded.
 3) Joining a club does not pigeon-hole a player into only playing those fleets. Certain Clubs may start looking more attractive.
 4) It does not change anything that has already been done - no one ever has to play a Theater Match (on the flip side, no player will ever be forced to play a Global Match).
 5) It will allow certain clubs to play games unrestricted. Few players will want (or be successfully able) to play a game with no restrictions against Club Pacific. Now both Club Pacific members and non-Club Pacific members can enjoy a no-year-limit, no-unit-limit game of IJN v. USN. Club Pacific (or Club Atlantic, or Club Indian, etc.) will still control their club as one of their members has to be playing in any match within their theater.

So what do people think? Would you be in favor of this addition to how the Theater Club works? I think if we make this change, we can present a fresh face to the Forum as a whole, and bring in some new members. We can make the Clubhouse more than it has become and instill new life and fervor!

As the club with the narrowest roster, I support this
Bull Halsey

as the second narrowest roster, i agree as well.

Wink...

I like the ability to "theatre-jump" for more variety.  I also would like to be able to play against a theatre opponent on even terms (same rules apply in theatre - like no submerged shot in CIO matches, or BigDawg USN vs. BigDawg IJN for CP).

The Global match (basically the way it is now) is also nice when you want to try out say the Russians vs. the French Smile

As someone with more historical tastes, I'm all for a proposal like this.  That makes for a lot of flexibility.

Would like to see more than 9 responses to the poll, but all 9 responses are in favor of this suggestion. Can we make it so? Very Happy

We can increase participation in Clubs by linking them to a possible new online world rankings. Of course, this would mean that Vergilius would need a lot of help for keeping track of the scores.

I am completely in support of this as an OPTION that adds to potential games.  I would be completely AGAINST it were it to be proposed as a REPLACEMENT of the current way we play. Wink

It's all a matter of phrasing. Wink

I think the change will give something to everyone!
SWO_Daddy

Like Brigman, I'm all for it as an option.  I just wouldn't want to see it as the only way to play.  I say go for it.  I'd look forward to playing with some of the CFS Navies.

A wise thought, but since it is tangential to the topic here, it deserves its own thread if we want to discuss it.

Brigs and SWO have seen this before.

This is a better proposal than the one I kicked around as it is a "BOTH/AND..." rather than an "Instead of..."

I think this preserves the current setup while also adding the significant benefits of the new ideas.  It also helps ensure all theatres are on "even" ground all the time.

Alright, I've let solo wait for the official ruling long enough, approved Very Happy

There will be a special event during the Theater Club League Championship dedicated to the new optional format to encourage people to try it out.  Cheers
