Club VFN Chat

I'm new to the whole club scene, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance.  As I understand it, we are supposed to keep the stickied thread clean for adding new members, posting battle reports, etc.  So, I'm opening this thread up for discussion on the newest club on the forumini.

What are our goals?  Are we playing club matches this season?  When does the season run until?  How can we best increase the power and prestige of the Vichy French Navy?

Nrnstraswa and I are participating in the destroyer obstacle course.  I'd like to play some games to represent us on the scene.  Is it true we won't have officers or awards?
nrnstraswa

Those are questions ND can answer better than I, but I think we need some time yet before we can play fleet matches.

I know for sure I'm not ready. In the meantime we can recruit some more people to our cause, seek out practice matches and figure out some good VFN builds.

The destroyer course will good practice for us I think. Smile

Being pirates, I would think that our goal is to be a nuissance to all others. The league finishes in about 40 days. We are not taking part because we were not official when it started. You can always play unofficial matches, of course. Just wear the avatar and use the units in the first post.

Are there class restrictions?  Is it literally only the units on that page?  For example, in a big game can I bring two Jean Barts and two Algeriés?

you can only use the units allowed by your clubs allowable unit list......historical restrictions are up to you and your opponent when you set up your club matches.  If you decide on a no class limits match, you can use as many jean barts as you wish Very Happy You also need to clear the use of the Forumini Navies cards with opponents so they are aware that they are in play (they can also use them then Very Happy )  hope this helps

Sounds good. Say, can we use the Bearn in our builds? Yes, she wasn't there during the British attack nor scuttled at Toulon, but she would give some interesting match ups for the VFN. I even have a Bearn repainted in Vichy colors.  Very Happy

Otherwise, the Commandant Teste will remain a staple in my builds. The ability to fly two scout planes like a carrier is nice, but she is fragile.
mnnorthstars

What's the official word on Bearn?
sublime828

This is from your VFN HQ

We use only ships that were attacked or were scuttled in November 1942 and have a reason to return from November 1942 to take their revenge.

The units that are listed are the units that are available for the Vichy.  Bearn was never under Vichy control and actually spent the first few years of the war in the Caribbean.  She was later used by the allies to haul aircraft around for the war effort.  I believe that is why she is not listed under the units that can be used in VFN builds.

Hope this helps Very Happy  Very Happy

I found the same thing but it's also mentioned that we have the ships that could have fought for Vichy.  Either way I think we'd both like the official ruling from founder.
sublime828

I'd wait on ND's ruling......but it is a Vichy Club.....historically the Bearn was never under Vichy control.  That is what sets CVFN apart from CFFN.....it only uses units operated by the vichy french which makes it unique from the other French Club.
nrnstraswa

Very well, we wait and see what ND says. If it's not allowed, Teste is still good.  Very Happy

As members of a nation club that is going to use smoke quite a bit, do any of you have ideas on how to keep Milan alive if it's by itself following use of Chase?

air cover, chase multiple milans and stack them 2 deep in the sector.....that way one can attack and one can smoke
nrnstraswa

Interesting. Will have to try to incorporate more smoke into my builds. I take it we can't use Bearn. Oh well, Teste works. I sank an Oi and damaged a Chitose in a solitaire match with lucky bomb and torp rolls from its planes. Very Happy

I rather like that the Teste's seaplane detachments has different values than Chitose's, makes it unique.

I got pounded this club season.  I'm tired of taking on fleets that'll for sure vital Dunkerque.  I'm also tired of torpedo swarms that roll below average.  Somebody please give me a mirror match here so we all can feel better about the Vichy French.

Sorry to hear that. You did fine regardless. Glad to see you flying the flag and playing matches.

Thread revive! Calling all Vichy!

I'm really excited about Team Poseidon and the opportunities the new cards and units hold for the VFN. New French units: (from the speculation thread)

04/72:   Alsace.
05/72:   Bévéziers.
06/72:   ?
07/72:   Joffre.
08/72:   ?
09/72:   Le Hardi.

Bevaziers works for us, it torpedoed HMS Resolution and was later sunk by Swordfish from HMS Illustrious. Le Hardi easily fits, as the entire class was scuttled at Toulon. Now Alsace and Joffre, that it much harder to determine. Would they have been Free French or could the Vichy have captured/finished them? Also interested in what the final two French units will be, hopefully one a patrol bomber or torpedo bomber.
mnnorthstars

They are highly subject to interpretation.  What if the Germans finished the designs and let the French have them?  That's kind of a stretch.  It's a lot less of a stretch, though, than if the Free French finished them.
nrnstraswa

Update, all the new French units and possible proxies for them.

04/72:   Alsace. (AKA Richelieu, or shapeways)
05/72:   Bévéziers. (AKA Casabianca, shapeways)
06/72:   Commandant Teste. (AKA Chitose or Bearn?)
07/72:   Joffre. (AKA Aquila or Graf Zeppelin, shapeways)
08/72:   Late 298. (AKA A6M2 "Rufe"?) (on shapeways as well)
09/72:   Le Hardi. (AKA Arunta/Haida/Cossack/shapeways)

Verg's review on our new Vichy French units:

Beveziers:   This might be the most important new French addition in the fleet.  If you know that the French are weak in submarines, that alters how you play against them in nation-pure settings.  Submerged shot is a perfectly natural and normal submarine SA, not something that is meant to depict nation characteristics. Consequently any submarine with submerged shot was the most logical inclusion for France.  What they got instead is a fairly high quality submarine.   I consider the 3-3-2 line to be the base for a 12 point submarine, usually with 1 or more SAs accompanying that stat line for flavor.   The Bevezier comes in at 3-2-2, but at 11 points.  This is remarkably close, but it is also easy to overestimate the value of a single torpedo at a single range.  In short, this is quite a good score.  When you add Battleship Killer to the card, you have the potential to throw 4-3-3, a superb score.  Battleships are one of the main archetypes and one of the main units that we need submarines to kill.  So undoubtedly Bevezier is a bit better than the 11 points on the card, though how much is difficult to say.  This has the benefit of making Bevezier into one of the better power units in the set.  A nation pure France gets a solid submarine.  A more generic Allied fleet can make legitimate choices between a 12 point Truculent and a 11 point Bevezier.   Overall grade:  B

Commandant Teste:   An Auxiliary similar to the Chitose.  Two seaplane detachments, though with slightly different stats than the Japanese version.  I’ve never been particularly impressed with the Chitose, though some use it to offer better placement chances to a Japanese air swarm.  Theoretically, that is now a possibility with France as well.  Within the TP deck, their Late 298 can be positioned for an air swarm, and they could always use their land base to bring a lot of cheap bombers.  The Commandant Teste has slightly better stats than the Chitose, and thus is slightly more expensive, but is a solid addition to the French navy.  It may or may not be useful for more typical power gamers, and may see a larger role in specific scenarios or among historical players.  Overall grade:  B

Late 298:  This torpedo bomber fills the role of a universal loitering patrol bomber such as the Emily or the Sunderland.  Sea Basing is the first application to a formal bomber.  The previous instance was on the Rufe.   This also allows the player to elect to bring several of these and to conduct a formal air swarm, since they don’t take up spots on the land-base.  In conjunction with the carriers, the Commandante Teste, and prior units that can be placed at the land-base, this could make for a very interesting pure French air build.   Sea-basing stands in for loiter.  Mission selection allows you to make it a torpedo or dive bomber, and to receive carrier expert bonuses as needed.  ASW will be good for suppression, but hardly more.   Compared to the Emily and Sunderland, you lose a fairly critical point of armor and vital armor, but only lose a point of cost, so I think the Late 298 is inferior to both in almost all settings.   Still it is among the more inventive and wonderful additions to the game and definitely has a key place in French fleets.  More generic allied fleets still might find a way to make use of Sea-Basing.   Overall Grade:  A

Le Hardi:   A basic destroyer, and at this point in the game’s development, short of having extremely inventive new SAs or some extreme power-game combination, we wouldn’t expect any destroyer to be all that impressive.  The new SA is Battleship Escort, and is one of the new SAs that amount to a Close Escort downgrade.  Basically it works like close escort but under more specific restricted settings.  In this case, the Le Hardi can escort a battleship to trigger a 3 zone sector, but doesn’t otherwise get the benefits of close escort.  That’s good from a fleet design perspective.  The battleship’s strong AA can help you keep destroyers alive as you move toward the objectives.  The destroyers unreliable 5 AA can also help abort a bomber periodically that is going after your BB.  All in all, this is a good solid destroyer, but it is still a destroyer.  Overall Grade:  C
