Campaign starting army

Part of our gaming group is starting a campaign which will span from 1939-1945 or even longer if the situation demands. It happens on a custom strategic map (about 40 sectors), which has many objectives on it, which help to accumulate points for armies. Main objective is to crush the enemies from the face of the map, and strategic objectives help in this. So the campaign is sort of Axis and Allies Miniatures and A&A Boardgame hybrid. Even if it do not have historical map it loans many features from it. Our armies will not be same size, so battles will be very interesting.

I know many players will find this campaign weird and mayby stupid, but hey this Game is for fun and not only to recreate historical scenarios. Though those are really fun too  Very Happy

Im playing axis, mainly German(no Japanese though). We are playing with basic rules (no expanded rules or platoons), with 2 custom rules, which are: spotters have range of 8 hexes and when shooting aircraft you will suffer -1 to hit per hex. In exception ofcourse those units which have antiair ability. Natural 6 is allways a hit too.

We start with 150 points and from initial sector. I want to plan an army which will be able to divide into two different, but still effective armies if the need rises, and Im sure it will. My enemies will be Russians, France and also British/USA will make an impact later on. We play with historical army limits. So only 1939 units to start with.

I have been thinking to build my army around Sdkfz 251 Halftruck, which is able to transport infantry. Infantry will be the key to holding of the sectors. But what to go with it? My army has to be versatile, small but still effective. We do not have unit limits, so infantry swarm will be possible, though I will not do that. Im sure the russian player will though  Very Happy. France player loves to use tanks.

Any ideas will be helpfull and if somebody wants I can elaborate the strategic map rules more, but those are not necessary when building an army.

Help is needed and greatly appriciated  Very Happy

Thank you Field Marshal PF, very interesting build. But few units are a bit earlier than 39. Panzerfaust and Werhmacht Oberleutnant. Without those the antitank abilities are reduced a bit. Maybe if 2 Panzer IIs are left out it is possible to take a Elite Panzer IV. But also a commander with his iniatiative bonus is a very important factor in the game. Hmm..

Have you played with this build. How did or how would use the light mortar? I often find light mortar very hard to use effectivily. It always get slaughtered.  Very Happy

Thank you for the build, I think it will be a great backbone for my army.

I've used the light motorized with my friends who use similar allied builds. In 1939, its really only vunerable to French armour. If you want you could cut out some half-tracks and their respective panzergrenadiers and add a Pz.IV D. The light mortar is just for flavour and the feel of a company, and yes its rather useless.

Flavor I can understand very well. It is important. I would love to have one sniper, but mayby when campaign proceeds more. I think my biggest problem will be French tanks, just like you said. One sniper could help in that  Very Happy
