Battle of the Month: Java Sea.

How's about we pick a battle per month to research and play
sublime828

sounds good Flak, I could use a little break from the Royal Navy. Perhaps we can look into a ABDA/IJN incursion. Maybe the battle where the Houston was lost. (pretty sure thats not in the Java sea but...) That was mostly a cruiser/dd engagement along with some landbased air support.

I'll have to bust out Ship of Ghosts to remember what all happened in that battle, it was pretty gruesome if I remember correctly.

The Houston and Perth were the follow night from memory.

Another though is to have a historical OOB and then a Alternative-History OOB with the gulden leeuwe
Brigman

I'm currently reading "Pacific Crucible: the Pacific War 1941-42" by Ian W. Toll.  Just read the chapter covering the battle of the Java Sea.  Great book, and a fascinating battle.  I'd of course *heard* of the battle, but never read the details.

Interestingly, a book series I enjoy - the Destroyermen - ties in to this setting and then loops off into Sci-Fi land.  But fun.

Exeter, Houston and DeRuyter all go down in this one (or the next day), so it definitely has impact on WAS units.  And there were several "Edsalls" involved as well!

I don't have time to check this morning but its worth checking houserules & scenarios to see if a scenarios exists - we can update it as needed if there is as a club house project

(if you can do it before i get back that would be helpful)

We have this scenario from Yipe
http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about8341.html

Looks we can update with newer units and we are good to go

Looks cool Flak, when would you like to try and get this battle going?  I would also think that the John C Butlers would get switched out with edsalls right?
Flakstruk

I think so. I suppose you might look at using the java custom card rather than a double of DeRuyter.

Also, how do we fit this into the club house?

Edit: We can also use the Naka rather than 2 jintsus

What exactly do you mean "fir it into the clubhouse'' ?

Do we just have these as friendly matches or work towards a league connection.
For now the friendly format is fine.

friendly format is fine for this

Ok

Alrighty

There are 2 Elements to the Battle of the Month

First is the actual battle - as represented by the Scenario (Thanks to Yipe)

Fleets
Quote:

ALLIED FLEET ABDA COMBINED STRIKE FORCE Eastern Strike Force Exeter Houston De Ruyter De Ruyter (Java/Java-class) Sydney (Perth/)

American Destroyer Group John C Butler (John D Edwards/Clemson-class) John C Butler (John D Ford/Clemson-class)

British Destroyer Group Javelin (Electra/E Class) Javelin (Jupiter/)

Dutch Destroyer Group Van Galen (Kortenaer/) Witte De With

AXIS FLEET OPERATION J Eastern Attack Force Jintsu (Naka/) Murasame Shigure
(Samidare/)

Eastern Covering Force Haguro Nachi Jintsu Isokaze (Amatsukaze/) Yukikaze

Edit: For which we need a map
Quote:
SET-UP and TERRAIN This scenario uses the "Open Sea" map. Place islands in the following sectors:

C3, D6, E2, F7 and G4

Allies The Allied player deploys first, placing his ships on row A.

Axis The Axis player deploys second, placing his ships on row K.

Second is a hypothetical twist.

You can play both, one or neither but feel free to add you tidbits of trivia or thoughts on the battle or scenarios

For the Hypothetical Element, substitute the De Ruyter as flagship for the Gulden Leouw (Decide with your opponent if that's the FN custom, Scharnhorst or Moltke) and let us know
