Attack questions

I have been using the original rules and am trying to add in the new rules and most of them I am fine with but...

From the new rules:

Ships: Make Gunnery and Torpedo attacks against enemy Ships in range. A Ship can make both Gunnery and Torpedo attacks in the same phase. You can attack different targets with each attack. If your ship has multiple batteries, each battery may fire one time. A Ship can't, however, make an ASW attack in the same phase it makes Gunnery or Torpedo attacks, and vice versa.

I can understand why you can use your gunnery attack and torpedo attack in the same turn, I can see why you cannot use torpedoes and ASW in the same turn as both are used in conjunction with the course of the ship , what I dont understand is why you cannot use ASW and your guns in the same turn...the turrets are independant of the course of the ship...

Can someone please explain this to me?

Quick reply would be to say that hunting for submarines was a much different job than prosecuting surface ships.  Firing off a torpedo while you are lining up the gunnery shots has some logic to it.

My 2 cents

Thanks for the quick reply,

I see what you are saying as a torpedo shot is usually held on a steady course until it is launched so it would be easier to use the guns while ASW would require some manoeuvering but if there was an enemy surface ship as well as a sub I would think the gun crew would still be attempting to fire at it, it just may be more difficult...even if the gunnery attacks only succeded on 5s and 6s to illustrate this point

In an effort to make DDs more useful, I would like to see them be able to make all of their attacks in one turn.  Smoke would still have to negate all other attacks though.

I can see your point here.  Maybe it should be Torps and Guns or ASW and guns, but not Torps and ASW.

I am fine with it the way it is as it is still a great improvement over the old way where torps were a seperate phase.

Historically Torps and guns are definately justified as battle of samar is perfect example of DD and DE firing guns while making a torp run.

Not sure historically about ASW and guns.  The only reason I can think for not allowing it is how much was sonar emploted during WWII.  If it was a significant part of ASW I would thik firing guns would interfer.  ????

I just dont see in general why you could not fire guns and use ASW, but your point about sonar would make a difference as well as the fact that enemy subs would definately be able to keep track of a DD firing its guns as well...

I dont know if in real life this would happen as I suspect subs fought away from surface ships, hence guns would not be used but in W@S DDs encounter both frequently I guess...

I'm not trying to change any rules I am just looking to understand the reasoning behind the rules, RB must have done this for a reason...in the meantime, with the new rules the ASW affects subs even if they dont damage them so that adds a little to thier power

In the original rules, DDs could fire either their guns or ASW during the Surface Phase and then fire their torpedoes during the Torpedo Phase, so torpedoes always got to launch.  Changing these rules was better in the end, DDs didn't last long enough to fire torps, but it is a tough decision to make when your DD is on top of a SS while in range of a BB.

LOL...another mistake on my behalf, as I was using the guns and ASW at the same time anyway...oh well...you learn something new everyday
