Arcane Legions

Saw 2 kids in the student Union playing this.

I was over looking them playing it, the movement reminded me of Pirates (short and long)

And the reason is the game was designed by some of the Wizkids creators.

Had some neat looking mechanics. I think I might buy a few Egyptians.

Yup, we've got a demo copy at the shop. The turning tool is a unique fix to the maneuver issue, so I give it props for that. The figs are fair, there are a lot of far better 1/72 figs out there. The factory paintjobs are awful, as bad or worse than series 1 D&D. The game does play pretty smoothly though, fast and simple. Takes about an hour to learn. Fair attempt at a mapless board wargame. I'll give it a seven out of ten, mostly for the minis.

Do you have access to the Demo kit?

Razz
Duck Crusader

Yup. Questions?

Further observations. ARK and I sat in on the demo tonight after we finished playing Battlelore. From what I've seen so far Romans are the baseline, good on both offence and defence, but not super-stunning at either. They do have the ability to reorganize on the fly better than Egyptians or Han, someting we took ruthless advantage of. Rock up the defensive and manuver stats and troop across the board as fast as you can and hit them first. With the Han you seem to be weilding something of a glass hammer. If you can hit them first you've got awesome striking power, while your archers are monsterous due to their SAs. However, their defence sucks monkey, and if they get smacked by the other side first you're going to get slaughtered. Hang back and shoot, trying to lure your enemy into your charge range while avoiding his. Haven't seen the Egyptians in combat yet so IDK what they're like.

The game is also a collectable one, which I didn't know, but you can at least buy packs for your own faction so you don't end up with a bunch of figures yoou don't want. There's one for infantry and anither for cav. A word of warning, there was a problem with the pre-release at gen con with people getting cards for units they had no minis or not enough minis for, and getting minis that they had no cards for which makes them useless. There's supposed to be a redemption program for fixing this.

After actually playing a couple of games I have to bump it up to an eight. I'm still not impressed with the figs, but the way the combat works forces you to chose wether to sacrifice defence, attack, or mobility untill you can reorganize. It's a bit deeper than I thought once you really get into it instead of just watching. Pretty much an excellent little BNP tabletop wargame.
ARK

It was a fun game. I think with a bigger table then we were using for the demo it would be better but it worked. It also sounds like the Price is not going to be that bad at all. The starter set is 120 figs for ~$35 and the boosters are supposed to be $16 or so.

A pretty cheap game.

though the league kits are pricy at 144 bucks a month (8 boosters for 3 weeks)

6 bucks a booster with 4 minis

1 of each faction + mercenary.
Duck Crusader

Um no.`A unit, which is 5-12 minis depending on what type of unit it is. So 20-48 figs.

No, the league boosters as I said.  Wink
Duck Crusader

I think you're reading it wrong. If that was the way they were doing it you'd be an idiot ever to buy a league pack, as the per figure price for cavalry in a booster is right at 99 cents, while that would be 1.25 be it infantry OR cavalry. and per fig cost for infantry is even lower.

I'll bet is is per unit.
Jesse_James

Nope, there is a rumor that W.E. will NOT have a minimum order. So you may be able to get packs you need. Say if you only have 4 players.

Though just a rumor.

There are some other little goodies as well such as victory cards and victory flags.

Though for 144 a month kind of steep for only getting 12 new miniatures a month, if they are even new. I think they would have been better of doing it Wizards of the coast style.

1 new unit, offer several of them, and some scenarios with maybe other goodies.

If you're right, and it's minis instead of units, it's not just steep but idiotic.

You're paying an extra 25 cents dor every hoirseman and like 75 cents for each infantry.

I think they have have F***ed them selves on the league kits.

Already several store owners online say they or their customers will not pay 144 for the league kits.

1 cool thing and negative thing is the centurion club.

You pay 3 bucks a month or 48 bucks for 2 years and you can create new tournament legal troop cards. And have access to special minis.

pricy shhhhhtuff but cool.
Duck Crusader

Which you'll be able to pick up for dirt on fleabay more than likely...

I played a demo at gencon. i might get in to this game but it's a toss up between this game and wing of war.
DarkMercy

I'd go with Wings of War myself, but that's just me.

Somebody ran a demo of this game at my FLGS, the Egyptians against the Han. The Egyptians' ability to essentially push a unit for free (due to being ably to regenerate a figure per turn) was interesting. Overall, the game didn't impress me that much, though the turning tool was a nifty idea.
Jesse_James

Its a neat little game. I'll buy a few to bring out every now and then for something different.

The way they set up the league F***ed up any shot of me going to one or being more involved in the game than I had planned.

Would rather spend more of my gaming bucks on getting all the expansions for battlelore or Tide of Iron.

Though for you between WoW and AL I might go with WoW

cheap but could be a bit pricey with the minis.

Has great replay value as well as great fun with 2 people or a group.

As did I.  The minis are utter crap, but like Duckie said the system itself is easy and kind of nice.  That being said I'll still stay away from this one.
