Anyone play American Civil War?In relation to my earlier Napoleonic's thread, does anyone game Civil War? Back in my younger days I played Johnny Reb 2nd Ed. published by the now defunct Game Designers Workshop (not to be confused with Goobers Workshop of Warhamster and Warhamster FirtyK infamy.) We used Ertl 1/72nd scale soft plastic figures for the Infantry and later IMEX figs for the Artillery and Cavalry. Our first campaign was the Western Theatre consisting of Missourri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Naturally everybody, being southerners, wanted to play the Rebs so we rolled dice to see who would play Billy Yank. I along with three others drew the Union. We fought several Battles from historical like, Shiloh, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga to hypothetical Second Baton Rouge, Pine Bluff, and Little Rock. All in all it was a fun campaign and a nice rulesystem.
So if you do play ACW what rulesystem do you use and what is your favorite scale? Salut and yeeehaaa y'all!

I played an online game for a while but the AH boardgame always looked good to me, but I guess the local stores do not figure an American Civil War game would sell well...LOL but the board is configurable so you can recreate a dozen or so battles...I have often thought about ordering one but it would cost me about $70 so I never bothered

I played ACW extensively. 15mm all the way. I sold off my pinted armies a while back, but still have hundreds if not thousands still in the bag (old glory, stone mountain, minifigs, battle honer etc.) or primed, just too much other stuff to do now.
Fire and Fury was the rule set I decided on which I believe is still published. Fast moving and easy enough with out endless modifiers and record keeping.
At the FLGS we played a set called Fields of Honor which basically covers entire 19th century including ACW. Good rules although we used many houserules. It is out of print, but FLGS bought the rights and was planning a reprint with the many house rules they developed. It was fast moving enough, but could get into ultra detail if you wanted to include thing like even an eclipse.
I miss my ACW, but not all the painting, so AAM/WAS has filled the void for now.

I played a civil war baord game. Kind of reminded me like AA. It came with really cool looking wooden dice.
As for a miniatures game, no.
Though I have always wanted to play with some Virginians and play an audio clip from the movie Gettysburg with the soldiers shouting "Virginia! Virginia!"

Yeah Yankee blue can get downright monotonous. The only exceptions were the Iron Brigade aka the the Black Hats, Irish Brigade loved their Regimental colors, New York Highlanders, and Zouaves. Another unit I discovered recently is a California unit, the Sacramento Hussar's. That would be a very interesting unit to paint up.
Rebs have a little more variety as more often than not many wore civilian clothing versus uniforms. You also have butternut and various shades of gray. The most fun to paint are the Louisiana Tigers and the New Orleans Washington Artillery.
Salut y'all!

I would love to get into this subgenre of wargames. I just don't know where to start or which games are worthy of playing. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone can direct me to some good Independence War games, it'd also be much appreciated.

Too Fat Lardies (ACW and AWI Rules)
http://toofatlardies.co.uk/
Skirmish scale, easy to play and fun. 28mm
Perries (plastic ACW troops)
http://www.perry-miniatures.com/
Stunningly good plastics in 28mm, excellent metal troops. Good prices, especally on the plastics.
Old Glory (Metal for both)
http://www.oldglory25s.com/
Decent metal troops, not outstanding quality but the price is very good, even better if you join the old glory army. Also 28mm.
Others can speak to their favorite scale/rules, that should get you started if you want a scale where you can actually see the uniforms...

Not minis, but I used to play the Sid Meier PC Civil War games--got so good at Gettysburg I brought home Decisives for both sides, then when I hit the battlefield in MeatSpace I had a mindscrew moment because all the roads, buildings and monuments clashed with how I had virtually "seen" the battlefield.

Califorinia Units????? I only heard of the 69th SanFransisco, but they did not march well because they were a little light in their brogans.
Being form WI the Iron Brigade is by far my favorite Unit.

True but they would certainly break the monotony of Yankee Blue! They'd definitely have a Green morale rating in Johnny Reb II. I don't know what battles they would participate in but they'd definitely look dandy. Kinda like Old Guard Grenadiers representing Plauche's Battalion at the Battle of New Orleans. But thats another subject. Salut and YEEEHAAA y'all!

You've forgotten about the Union Zouaves who were quite numerous in the Eastern army and in fact there was a great deal of variance in the Western armies (mainly in headgear). Also don't forget Berdan's Sharpshooters, 6th Pennsylvania (Rush's Lancers), US Marines, and the US Regulars (Hardee hats) as some unique Federal units.

The only units that should be wearing Hardee hats for distinction is the "Iron Brigades (2nd, 6t, 7th WI, 19th IN, 24th MI).

Games playedI currently have and play BattleCry (AH) 1999 I acquired it in 2006 and painted up the miniatures.
Since then I tried to upscale the game to 54mm useing Conte and Britains prepainted figures. I have a Hotz 5" Hex mat with the same layout as the game board. I created some 3-D terrain such as Hills, fences, entrenchments and used model trees and some buildings when neccesary.
It actually turned out well and I GM'd a few games at local conventions with the 54mm soldiers and it was a real hit.
I have played this at Gametable online and I generaly get my but wooped.
When I was in my teens I had painted up 15mm figures and used some genaric rules to play with my friends, but I was in the minority of gamers back in the 80's for my age.
Now I Wargame weekly and love it very much.
I posted some pictures of my 53mm Battlecry games on BBG if you want to check it out.

Have you got a link for that? I'm about to bet rid of a ton of 54mm as part of a condensing of my collection, but I still love a well-put toghther 54mm game. Ironically, more than a few of the pieces I'm going to drop are the ones you're using, as well as a number of Forces of Valor Civil War pieces.

54mmI used to play ACW in 15mm but sold them of to upgrade to 54mm. The only scale I now use for ACW.
Have played Johney Reb but prefered Fire and Fury. Now I use the Warengine Universal rules for most of my mini games.
I play ACW in scirmish scale and in regt scale.

I still have hundreds if not thousands of 15mm figs in various stages from unpainted to primed sitting in drawers downstairs. I sold off my collection because my painting skills had improved and the older stuff just did not measure up. Always intended to re-bulid, but then life happened.

Hey, afilter,
I recognize many of those figures from the various companies.
Nicely done.
I have been painting 15mm ACW for YEARS and I have several Fire and Fury brigades. I dusted them off and played this weekend.
The Gallant Southern Defenders repulsed the Yankee Aggressors in grand style (and it wasn't me rolling the dice).
Anyway, Fire and Fury rules are simple and quick (like A&A) and fun to play.
I'd probably play more if I didn't have to set up 3D terrain.
I like the appearance, but it takes time to set up and take down.
How do I post pictures without posting them on Photobucket first?

Yep, I own Fire and Fury along with the two scenario books. I also tried my hand at Johhny Red and very early "On to Richamond". I was in the process of graduating to "Fields of honor" last I played as that is what the LGS uses..
This past weekend I reclaimed my mancave (aka cleaned the basement) and found all my unpainted minis (drawers full) as well as rule books. It is tempting to paint now that I have an area to do it, but I think they are all going to find their way to auction.

Granted I was trying to figure it out on my own, but I found Johnny Reb a little complicated. Fire and Fury was is first choice for ease of play and simplicity and then Fields of Honor(Not in Print) that the LGS introduced me to.

Yup. I've got some AIP Zulu war Brits in 54mm that I'm getting rid of as part of my downsizing. They've got pretty good detail and not much flash. I'd rate them about 20% better than Britain's Deetail, and about the same size.
