Alternate build.....haven't tried yetI've come up with a different (I think) way of creating a fair and maybe balanced game. Let me know what you think.
Axis vs Allies
Both players pick one of each of the below for free;
Carrier, with complete air wing
Battleship
Cruiser
Destroyer
Submarine
Land based Airplane
Then add up how much your fleet costs.
THEN your oponent gets to pay that many points to finish his fleet. But you get his points to finish yours. Even fleets (pointwise) and at least one of all the major types.
I haven't tried this yet but it sounds interesting....and balanced.
Try it and let me know.

Next time I get a chance to play I will. Looks like a good idea.

The one thing I like about this build is you are less likely to get the biggies. That will give your opponent more points to spend.

I'm going to assume that I cannot change my selections during the buy up phase. So lets get hhhyyyyyypooooothetical.
Bob chooses
Frank chooses
... repeat as necessary ...
Bob has 203
Frank has 195
Both decide the game should be played at 250pts, so Bob being the higher valued fleet chooses to ships/planes to fill in to that 250. Frank then gets to do the same, filling in his fleet with 8 more points than Bob and ending at 250. Would it work, plausible, would it make a difference? Not really.
Say you remove the fill in step, and only Frank gets to add in 8 more points. Its a little better, but really thinned out. Hrmm.

I like it; pretty good idea on the whole. The real advantage is in finding a creative way to get every unit type involved while still leaving a player breathing room to add their own personality and flair to the build. I'll propose to my group that we try it sometime.

I have also thought of this concept and think it is a good idea for a few reasons:
1. It makes fleet builds with variety.
2. Gets units involved that otherwise might not.
3. I like lists with three items.
