Aircraft rules

I have been playing AAM for about 6 months now and slowly getting my head around the rules. Initially I found aircraft to be awful as in the basic rules they were easily dealt with. I tried some rules I found on the wizards website that made aircraft much more resilient (some of the expert rules). I have since bought the expanded and used the rules with the range modifier.

Anyway question: Which set of aircraft rules do people use and prefer? Or is thier another clearly better way to use aircraft?

I think my group must play with the original aircraft rules from Contested Skies, because they always get shot down early. What is the range modifier? I really need to sit and re-read the rules. I've never been a big fan of the airplanes.
