1944.12.21 - Kurland Fortress Scenario

Okay everyone, let me know what you think.

Last year, our gaming group decided that everyone should come up with one scenario.  This was my contribution.  This was done on the old maps (I had done winter maps (modified, printed PDFs) for this scenario)

Let me know if you play it.  I'll share the feedback I got from our game group in a sperate post.

Also, please let me know if you have any questions!   Smile

Kurland Fortress Campaign
The 4th Panzer Attacks

Dec. 21, 1944, Dzukste, Latvia
In the fall of 1944, the Soviet army cut off Army Group North in the western half of Latvia creating the Kurland Fortress.  From Oct. 1944 to the end of the war, the Soviets mounted no less that six major offensives in a desperate attempt to destroy the German forces trapped there.  The results of the six offensives for the Soviets were mere miles gained in exchange for over 500,000 Soviet casualties, 1,500 tanks, and 1200 guns.

On Dec. 21, 1944, the Third Offensive by the Soviet to destroy Army Group North began.  The Soviets attacked the eastern part of the fortress trying to punch another hole in the German defense.  In front of them stood a Kampfgruppe of the 205th Infantry Division and the 19th Waffen Grenadier Division der SS.  In this attack, the Soviets employed the 101st and 102nd Armored Brigades and the 22nd Guards Division.  Despite a valiant attempt to stem the opening tide, the Soviets rolled over the German defenses causing them to fall back.  However, not all was lost.  The 4th Panzer Division had recently been sent as a fire brigade to the 16th Army.  It included a brigade of Schwere-Panzer Ableilung 510 – Consisting of Tiger tanks!

3. Tanks cannot enter frozen pond hexes, but can enter frozen swamp hexes.  The tank cost is double movement (two movement points) and must roll a 4+ to enter.  Tanks do not receive cover in frozen swamp hexes.
4. Roads are snow-covered and give no movement bonuses.

1. Soviet forces set up on the two (2) eastern most, full hexes of Fox-1 and Able-2.
2. The Kampfgruppe 205th Infantry Division sets up on any whole hex on Fox-2.
3. The 19th Waffen Grenadier Division der SS sets up on any whole hex on Baker-2.
4. Schwere-Panzer Abteilung 510. enters from the western most hexes.  Their entry turn as reinforcements begins on turn 2.  The Axis player must roll the number of the turn plus 1 or less to receive the reinforcements (roll a 1 (1+1=2) on Turn 2, 2 or less on Turn 3, etc.)
5. German reinforcements cannot enter in a hex that contains or is adjacent to a Soviet Unit.

It looks very good. I will try it later this year, because it's 1944 and in our gaming group we play the whole of the war from teh beginning. We are now only in early 1940, so will take some time till we reach your scenario Smile.

This looks fun, Lettische.  tank  tank  tank

Just a bit more information on this scenario...

When our group first played it, the Soviet player had a very hard time of it (only one Soviet victory of the six games played).  At that time, the Axis player had an Oberlt. on their side and the Soviet player only had a single KV and no DP-27.

Based on the above results, I added the 2nd KV and the DP, and took away the Oberlt.  Another possibility further is to eliminate one of the PAK-40's.  I'm still can't decide if that's taking away too much.

This was also done before the Expanded Rules came out, so Overwatch may change the balance as well.

And again, if they put out winter maps in 3" hexes, I might redo the map completely!   Shocked
