1941 USN vs. Japanese 100 point buildsJapan has a big advantage in a 1941 limit battle since USN has no DD's (Set III's Phelps and Richmond will obviously impact this build)or Subs and the Devastator is, well underwhelming. In a 100 point game a Japanese Cruiser/Destroyer fleet with some Zero's to defend against USN air is tough to beat. I'm teaching my boy the game and that other (non-USN) navies can be fun to play and toying with these builds. Any suggestions?
IJN: Tone/Akitsuki - Nachi/Akitsuki - 2 Isokaze - 1 Type 13 - 2 Zero's. Every IJN ship carries LL torps, the Tone's scout cruiser upgrades the gunnery attack on one target every turn. The Type 13 might actually be useful since the inability of USN to buy DD's in a 1941 game means the IJN is guaranteed a numerical advantage in real ships. Can the USN afford to shoot at the Type 13 early in the game since they should be concentrating on the better IJN ships. But if they don't can the Type 13 actually sneak in and steal an objective?
For the USN: SLC/Brooklyn - 2 Brooklyn's - 2 Dauntlesses - 3 Wildcats.
I'd actually prefer another Brooklyn to SLC but only have the 3. The strategy would be pretty straightforward. Use escorted Dauntlesses to attack 1 IJN ship each turn starting with Tone, use the Brooklyns rapid fire SA ASAP and hope they sink 2-3 of the Japanese ships before the fleets close to LL range. I'm not sure if I'd use the extra Wildcat to try and eliminate the Zero's or to strafe the Type 13 and Isokaze section.

These look pretty good as teaching fleets. They have a good variety of units to learn different aspects of the game.

thanksI purposely left out an IJN sub since I just don't think a USN build with either a 'Cat or Devastator as it's only ASW platform would have any chance.
If it was a real build on either side I'd replace the Type 13/1 Isokaze for a sub on the IJN side. I'd expect that build to beat a 1941 USN build say 75% of the time. On the US side I'd swap a Wildcat for a 'Cat but I'd dread actually fighting the IJN with it.
I can't wait for the new USN DD/Omaha CL in set III to see how this might be tweaked.
Finally, I love the Brooklyn's as an early war, inexpensive CL for the American's!

Right now, I'm working on two 200-point 1941 fleets for store demo purposes.
Japanese:
Akagi with Zeke, Val, and Kate
Isokaze
Yamashiro
Kongo
Nachi
Tone
I-19
American:
Saratoga with F4F, SBD, TBD
Arizona
Tennessee
Boise
Salt Lake City
Richmond
2x Phelps
It's rather balanced, and gives a good exposition of the various facets and abilities in the game.
