He gives German MG's COVERING FIRE.
Thanks for the catch. I made an edit that should clear it up.

Don't the Germans get an LMG then...?

The MG34/42 was LMG, MMG and HMG depending on the configuration. This gives the Germans some versatility on how they use it.

The weapon itself was versatile, but it needed its tripod to be used in the heavy role (comparable to the Vickers, M1917 etc). They could not easily remove the weapon from or put the weapon on the tripod during a fight, so while the WEAPON could perform both roles, the UNIT could not realistically perform both roles.
The squad tactics of the riflemen moving up under cover of the LMG, and then the LMG section catching up while the riflemen covered them (which is what Covering Fire tries to emulate somewhat, especially the first half) could not be executed with the much heavier and much more time-consuming to set up MMG. LMG / light role is offensive, MMG / heavy role is defensive.
Of course, as it is a commander ability, you could still do it; after all, commander abilities can model exceptional situations. However, you should not use the existence of this ability to skip making a light role version of the MG34/42 altogether.
Unfortunately all MG34/42 models we got from WotC so far showed the light role but had the stats and the name ("machine-gun team") for the heavy role (with Double Shot and without Covering Fire), so the chances of ever getting the true heavy role mini are probably slim . I use the sandbagged version for the heavy role.
