Revision September 2009 for scenario: German Invasion- Op. Adjacent
Following the previous topic ( http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about6412.html ) the 2009 July "Op. Adjacent" revision is posted here.
| Quote: | OPERATION “ADJACENT”
Location: France, near the town of Bethemont
Date: 15th May, 1940
Part of operation “Case Yellow/ Case Red”, the capture of the town of Bethemont (FRA) named operation “Adjacent” is of vital importance to the German High Command in the on-going invasion of France and the Low Countries.
The concept of Blitzkrieg took the French by surprise. The French Army doctrine seems outdated, morale among the ranks is down and few are the victories that keep the French hoping for now.
First days of the invasion are almost an all-out success for the German attackers who succeed in destroying the French Aviation and a big part of the British Royal Air Force support. Having domination over the skies, the Germans advance into France and the Low Countries at an alarming rate. The Panzer Divisions use their superiority in numbers and coordination to outflank and outmaneuver the Allied defenses. Still, not everything works out as planned for the invaders. Allied unified Command in France is able to organize some key points of resistance and the Maginot Line is yet to fall entirely.
One of the strong points against the German advance is Bethemont, a strategic town that is now defended by French, British and Polish troops. Intelligence on the Axis part has the Allied defensive plan cracked so the newly formed 22nd Panzer Division bound for North Africa is relocated to German Army Group B.
Initially, 31st SS Division had to attack Bethemont alone but their lack of combat missions gives doubt to the German High Command, so in light of new intelligence, it is decided that 22nd Panzer, formed mainly from veterans of the Poland Invasion, will join in the attack.
15th of May 1940, operation “Adjacent” is about to start. Allied defenders are on positions waiting the German arrival in the area. The French High Command plans to wait for the first attack before taking any initiative to counter-attack and push the Germans back.

| Quote: | SCENARIO PLOT
Army Deployment: Allied players first (inclusive of traps and obstacles), then German players.
1st Turn (only): German players move/attack first, then Allied players.
5th Turn: beginning of 5th turn, verify if units of 22nd Panzer (GER) are (were) in the deployment area of 12th Mechanized (FRA) – condition for French Reinforcements.
Turns 1 to 5 (inclusive): if all Allied troops are inside the Defense Perimeter of the town, the Axis player(s) are reinforced with a Siege Battalion.
|
| Quote: | Dice modifiers / Unit restrictions / Reinforcements:
-3rd Luftwaffe Fighter-Bomber Squadron (GER): Raid, Luftwaffe HQ (reinforcements are deployed adjacent to the HQ).
-12th Mechanized Light Division (FRA)*: Low Morale.
*Reinforcements: if after 4 complete turns no units of 22nd Panzer (GER) are in the deployment area of 12th Mechanized (FRA), a French infantry battalion (2x MAS Rifle) is deployed as reinforcements adjacent to the Objective hexes.
-4th Infantry Division[i] (POL): Lack of Equipment.
-Siege Battalion: if in the first 5 turns, all Allied troops are inside the Defense Perimeter of the town, the Axis player(s) are reinforced with a Siege Battalion (1x Pioneers, 1x Flammenwerfer deployed adjacent to any friendly unit).
Victory conditions: In order to win, the German players must place one unit in each of the 3 hexes designated as Objectives in the town of Bethemont and hold the Objective hexes one full attack phase. Holding the Objective hexes is validated if at the end of a turn, the German player(s) has a unit in that hex, regardless of any enemy units that may be also present. If the German players fail, the victory is given to the Allied defenders.

| Quote: | Deployment maps and Orders:
GERMANY
[i] 22nd Panzer Division
“Herr Oberst, your primary objective is to take the town of Bethemont.
Intelligence gives as certain a French Mechanized Division and a small Polish force having reinforced positions in the forest situated North of your Field Headquarters and South of the town. We anticipate some resistance so act fast and decisive.
British Expeditionary forces are also present in the area, most likely defending the eastern road that leads into the town. Do not engage them alone if possible!
31st SS Panzer Division “Parsifal” is also heading towards Bethemont from the South-East along your left flank. We hope they get there in time to deal with the British forces. Assist them, once they’ve arrived.
Luftwaffe Command has informed our HQ that your air support is limited to one Mission and will be provided by 3rd Fighter Bomber Squadron. If the mission is successful Luftwaffe Command is willing to reinforce your Division with an infantry battalion.
If all Allied defenders are inside the defensive perimeter of Bethemont, we will reinforce you with a Siege Battalion.
Now, take that town, it is vital for the success of the invasion. These are your orders!
Enclosed you will find the deployment maps with the objective area.
Army Group B HQ”
31st SS Panzer Division “Parsifal”
“Herr SS Standartenfuhrer, your primary objective is to take the town of Bethemont.
You will approach the town from the South-East roads that are guarded by elements of British Forces. Take them out and then join the effort of the 22nd Panzer Division already present in the Area, West of your positions. Though the Allied forces lack the coordination, you may encounter French Mechanized Elements and Polish infantry units also. If they oppose, engage and destroy them, before moving towards the town.
22nd Panzer has limited air cover from the 3rd Fighter-Bomber Squadron. If needed, take the initiative and call Luftwaffe support in order to assist you, before they do.
Your orders: destroy all Allied troops that you encounter and assist 22nd Panzer in conquering the town! Maps enclosed.
Heil Hitler!
FRANCE
12th Mechanized Light Division
“Général de division,
Deploy your troops mainly in the forest South of the town of Bethemont, reinforce your positions there (make use of all obstacles and traps put at your disposal) and stop the German advance. You will be facing an enemy Mechanized Division that initially was bound for North Africa.
Most of our troops lack the morale but should you be able to stop the enemy from passing the woods, our Divisional HQ will reinforce your Division with an Infantry Battalion to replace your losses.
The main objective is to defend the town of Bethemont, so fall back if needed and defend it at all costs. The center of the town must not fall into enemy hands or all it’s lost!
Under your command was placed also the Polish 4th Infantry Division that was refitted in France.
British Expeditionary Forces are deployed East of Bethemont, guarding the roads leading into town. We expect some advanced German troops to be heading their way, but the 5th British Mechanized should assist you after they secure the area.
Your deployment maps are here enclosed.
Vivé la France!”
BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE - BEF
5th Mechanized Infantry Division
“Lieutenant Colonel,
Your orders stand clear: defend Bethemont from all out aggression! You will be facing a SS Panzer Division in great need of proving itself. We anticipate their arrival along the roads entering the town from the East and South East, so take defensive positions accordingly and block any attempt to enter the town by the enemy.
French troops are positioned South of Bethemont, (SW of your deployment area) in the forests, blocking an incoming attack by another German Panzer Division, likely not a SS one though.
Our effort is limited so engage only in situations where you are not outgunned or outnumbered. Proceed with maximum caution and fall back to the town if the situation becomes critical. We cannot replace your loses so keep them to a minimum, while inflicting maximum damage to the enemy. The Royal Air Force is for now unable to assist you.
If possible, help the French effort in the SW, we expect them to encounter difficulties in dealing with the enemy. A small Polish contingent is under French Command there also, but we asses the Poles situation as critical since they are badly equipped for this type of engagement.
It is paramount for the Joint British – French Command that this town doesn’t fall into enemy hands.
Documents regarding the field situation are forwarded to you along with Your Orders.
God save the King!”

The soundtrack:
To wrap this up, I specify that new input for perfecting this scenario is always welcomed (as it has been until now also), please do PM me for any info regarding my Custom map(s).
Last, some pictures from one of test games for Op. Adjacent.
The French deployment:
The Objective town of Bethemont and a few British units blocking the road to it:
22nd Panzer finds a gap in the defensive line and tries to break through:
The Pzkw 38(t) and the Sdkfz 222 race through the gap, while infantry and the P3 F try to infiltrate also:
The 38(t) and the 222 reach the town outskirts:
SS Division "Parsifal" deals with the Exp British Force and closes the circle on Bethemont:
----------------------------------
A touch of 3D, nothing special... for the fans of this scenario a look at the Bethemont town - 1st quadrant of the map setup was used only.
1944 this time, SS Parsifal on the defense... JagdPanther prepares for the incoming battle, while a Hetzer is hit by long range artillery.
Outskirts of Bethemont, a Marder III gets attacked by a Spitfire.
Battle in the sky since Luftwaffe is also present above Bethemont.
Aftermath of the battle, US forces enter the "remains" of the town:
British troops near in the outskirts of the town
Germans are pushed out of the town but try to counterattack
Italian support troops attacked by Spitfire
The air battle also develops in a serious dogfight
-----------------------------

Played another time this scenario yesterday, at the plea of my play group that were protesting the Germans were too powerful with the High Morale for 22nd Panzer (rerolls one die at choice in attack phase) and the Allies cant win.
I've played the French and Polish troops with an aggressive tactic - best defense is attack. I've succeeded in taking out that Lel G18 howitzer with enhanced range 12 with the Polish Cavalry, in turn 2! That was a bitter blow to the Axis. Then I took out the PAK35/36 with the Panhard. The Somua was lost in cover even without any use, though got one shot at the Elite P4 and missed. The Renault damaged the Panzer 38(t), while from the British side the Bofors shot down the Me110, and damaged some other 2 german tanks.
After inflicting as much damage as possible, in turn 6 all Allied infantry retreated in the town for close combat. I succeeded in activating the French reserves ( that was another small victory), while the German players failed to activate theirs.
In the end, I lost the 3 objectives to the Germans though it was a very good game. In the close combat in the town I took out the SS Hauptst. and was another bitter blow to the Axis. Though the Ruthless for the SS Stormtroopers and SS Panzergrenadier is a damn good ability. My play group was right, the High Morale for 22Panzer was dropped, so this should even things out, hence this update of the scenario.
1st post updated - removed High Morale for 22 Panzer. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

"A touch of 3D", that is the name of the pics I've added in the first post - hit refresh, look at the end of the first post for a dozen new pics.
Though no trees present - still waiting for a bunch of them to... grow, no special 3D buildings, even if those present are some 15% out of scale (bigger), nonetheless after the game I had today, wanted to do a fast photo-shoot out while rolling a few dice for fun.
If I ever get those trees... growing fast enough, a few in scale buildings, well... such a game should look more like a diorama on the Op. Adjacent map.
So the people who asked me about 3D, well... you bring the trees, I'll bring the support map!
regards,
PS= save the trees, do not print this unless important _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

A quick question, I don't have a 38(t) so what could replace it? Another Panzer III perhaps? _________________ "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak, Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." - Churchill

If you do not have 38(t) you can replace it with a Panzer III F.
In all the games (several) using this scenario, the 38(t) was the most useful tank. Maybe that is because I play in a certain manner, dont know, but that tank always won me my games.
The scenario is a general guideline. Anyone can change it or substitute the pieces with other, that is no problem, but one should be careful not to mess with the equilibrium of the scenario. Using a P3 as a substitute, well you make it a tiny bit harder on yourself to win if you play Axis.
Btw this scenario will get revised (rev. 3) after Early War comes out. Pzkw. I and BEF Infantry will be also present, while the Gurka Infantry will most likely disappear. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here
