My Normandy books arrived today. After a cursory examination of them, and a review of the scenarios you all have already written for Normandy, Summer '44, I've got my focii.

I'm going to do a couple of scenarios for Operation Totalize and Operation Tractable durng the lead up to Falaise, August 8-15: Canadian Lt. General Guy G. Simonds' II Canadian Corps, converted Priest APCs, Polish Sherman Fireflies, Nebelwerfers and Panthers galore, Tiger Ace Michael Wittman, Churchill Crocs... what else could anyone ask for?

I'm hoping these will nicely fit, chronologically speaking, in between (on one end) Snippersley's "Caen Campaign" (under construction), Genral Hoth's scenarios from the same mid-July period, "Schwere Panzer Abtileung "and "Hill 112" and Remember OWS's  "Carpiquet Scenario" (in process) and (on the other hand) Remember OWS's "SS Htlerjugend Delaying Action at Les Maisons Blanches."

I wish you do it well, because I got 4 scenario depicting the same period!?! I'm jocking, for the way you do it. Put your touch in it, I'll do my job for mine. PM your date of scenario, so we would not design the same battle for nothing.

I am Canadian, and I got so many books on this area. By the way, did you get any German side book. Most of the Old 60'/'70/'80  British style books are not precise. I've stubble over the years in many German translated books for the defence of Normandy. It is refreshing to see new German Author rewriting the history and correcting some misbelief in the Normandy Chaos.

I've just finished reading Antony Beevors' D Day and both operations you are planning to put into scenario format are very well documented plus its a good read.
cant wait to see your scenarios, i love Brits VS German scenarios. Different armies make for interesting battles. Cool

General, be careful about Mr. Beevor, he made many mistake in his books, this one is not apart. I wish you read it in English, the translation is really poor.

I know, my dad read it in french, i did in english. My version is far superior (more pictures, better paper, more maps).

nevertheless i have to disagree OWS.
Beevor had access to incredible archives, check the last few pages for sources.

i really enjoyed all of his books. maybe you said this because he does have a "journalistic" approach, a bit like Mabire.? Cool

It interesting you had access to both the original English and the French translation.

About his research. One thing, Mr. Beevor once told in a interview, that he does not read German, nor Russian, that makes him in the mercy of translation, sometimes poor, to my point of view.

Second thing, yes, the journalistic writing can be a burden, most of the time, with second access notes, but not like Mabire. Mabire is a descriptive and Romanesque style, leaving interpretation.

Third, many of the source Mr. Beevor is pointing are old, out of date, rarely use by other historic authors and that all leaves me with some worry about his real personal research of the subject. I am mainly referring to the Stalingrad book's (French and English), whom have I read at least 4 times each. I am not the only one disturb about his lack of analysis and facts. For the D-Day I have yet to read it. But I am not thrill spending a dime on it. Since I own the Battle of Spain, the Stalingrad Siege, the Crete and the After the Liberation of Paris, who have all disappointed me in many ways... that is why, if you can find the book used, it would be better. In the case of the D-Day, it would be hard since the book came out last year.

Another author that should not be use for the Normandy theatre, is Mr. Tout, for the same reason as Mr. Beevor and I would even go farther in saying that the Mr. Tout is relying on personal account and personal fiction to fill his books.
