My friend and I finally got a chance to play these aircraft ruels yesterday.  While my board is not quite as large, mine is only 3-4 squares larger, the rules weres till very effective.

It made the game a lot more realistic and fun.  We thought the aborted rules were awesome, allowing a plane to regroup and try again.  The only down side we felt was the full turn to rearm once you landed.  In 10 turns, most of hte planes only got to attack twice.

For our games we will take out the full turn rearming rule, and allow planes to begin rearming as soon as they land and re deploy the next turn.

Other than that, this was well thought out and a lot fo fun.  We even looked up the different planes and compared air speeds to your ranges and I ahveto say, you really did your research.  They were all + or - 30 MPH within the range bands you allotted.  Great work!

Thanks for posting this.

Updated and included the Flank Speed aircraft in the plane movement table.

Enjoy!

Thanks!  We really enjoy it.

I have had the map almost three years now. It is actually in two 4'x4' section now with handles for easier storage and trasport.  I have added a 2nd side to each section and we play 3D AAM, pirates, Wings of War, SWM as well as use it as a table for traditional A&A and other board games.

Here is a shot of it being used for AAM:

(You can see the other half in the background)

As for scenarios they really make the game more fun and show the versatility of the house rules.  The best part of house rules is you can modify them to fit a particular scenario.

As for scenarios my son is really pushing me to to do something with Pearl Harbor.  Now that we have the USS Arizona (Pennsylvania, Nevada and soon Oklahoma) he wants to refight the attack.  The issue I am having scale. Pearl harbor would fit in like 2 sectors and totaly blow the plane scale per sector to achieve historical results.

Instead I think I am going to generate an alternate history with the USN fleet getting a warning and a partial sortie either just before or just after the first air raid.  Still working it out.

My reason for posting is not to encourage or try to force people to play the way we do, but open them up to the possibilities of expanding their W@S experience.  Even if you just take the air movement rules and tape 2-3 paper maps togehter (been there) it can really expand the game from the "beer and pretzel" game it is to something a bit more without having to invest in other rule sets like Victory at Sea, In Harm's way or Genertal Quarters which are all neat, but a bit more than what I or my sons want right now.

I recently edited the word document, so if any would like an updated copy just PM me with an e-mail address.

Enjoy!

Game concepts for aircraft speed are always interesting to consider.

Wasn't there a speed calculator on the Wizards forum a couple years ago? I'm bringing it up because the numbers are different than yours... the Zeke was able to move 18 sectors, the swordfish only 8 sectors based on that equation.

Any thoughts on difference in scale or the equations used to calculate the speed? The posting seemed to spark as much interest as yours. To my chagrin, my friends are really interested in trying this out (although we did something similar a while back which extended the game a bit longer than I wanted)..

I suspect the difference may be because under these rules the planes move twice per turn (during air movement, and again during air return) so you may need to double these numbers to compare...

Ahhh ... i missed that. I like the thought of the 2-stage movement.

Thanks for posting.  I built a map based off of this and the rules are great, they add a lot to the game.  I attempted to make islands but they don't look nearly as good as yours.  Thanks!

Welcome Artemis!

I agree with you that these are perhaps the best long distance rules out there.  I too use these and find them a lot of fun

Thanks all I am glad you are enjoying them.  We have been using these rules in some variation since WAS first came out.  They are always a work in progress.

I recently had to refurbish the board and islands after over 3 years of service.  Here is a new picture where you can see the handles and how the two halves are connected.

Amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do. Wink

Correct. slide in an out with a pair of plyers and kep the table together well.

Two halves make it much easier for storage.  Other sides of the two halves are used for AAM, Wings of War, Pirates, and just general gaming surface.
