Post subject: New Guinea 1942 - Pacific Campaign

After a desert map, a winter map, amphibious assault map and so on, here is the jungle map / pacific map that was previewed a few weeks ago.
Though it lack the proper scenario (a few ideas here I have), it should see a confrontation between Imperial Japan Forces and US + Australian Forces. Below you will find some basic info, the scenario will be defined probably until October this year.
Of course, the map is available for trade.
| Quote: | 1. Background
On November 16, 1942, Australian and United States forces attacked the main Japanese beachheads in New Guinea, at Buna, Sanananda and Gona. By January 22, 1943, after prolonged heavy fighting in trying conditions, the Allied forces had overcome the defenders. Casualties were extremely high. Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger later compared the casualty ratio to the United States Civil War. As a percentage of casualties, killed or wounded in action at Buna exceeded the better known Battle of Guadalcanal. |

4. Scenario Plot: Not defined
5. Dice modifiers, Unit restrictions, Color hexes: Not defined
6. Victory conditions: Not defined |

The last map without a scenario, the New Guinea map was used today by my playgroup for a 1942 historical game (no airborne units), USA (160 pt) vs defending JAP (140 pt), 2 objectives (first the POW camp, second the small port - seen with red markers in the pics).
To spare the time, I took a nasty beating playing (together with a friend) the Japanese. Even if giving the US a 20 pt advantage was an error, nonetheless we got screwed by the gringos. US forces did not use any tanks, we used the HO-NI (has no AI values!) and the CHI-HA. Both tanks were useless, with a big plus in this case for the HO-NI. My Japanese friend used a KA-MI that took out a yank Halftrack and that was all.
US player deployed only one heavy mortar but with its improved indirect fire it got nasty. Beware also of Thompson Gunners while using cover maps as this one. On short range those are lethal. Then we faced Rangers (def 5, reroll one attack die)...
Japan also used SNFL Fanatics, very good but not good enough in this case, along with Arisaka Rifles. No Banzai charge, since US player was intelligent and kept as from Banzai-ing with a lot of potential defensive fire.
So Japan lost but it was a good game, my first played with the Japanese. They could REALLY use a transport and a spotter, maybe a little more artillery to be more efficient at least in 1939-42 games.
A few new pics in the first post. Hit refresh. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

It's always hard to play the japenese!
Nevertheless i've seen the rangers' flank, it looks strong.
But its also very interesting i think. Your map should be of great use to them.
Also, from the pics, the US infantry can walk on water hexes? _________________

| I've had some fun with the Japanese on the jungle maps from NA. One of the things that Japan needs is a tank commander with a Banzai/Aggression like SA. Something like "Friendly tanks in adjacent hexes can move one hex and then attack". According to my Osprey book about Japanese tanks, this how they were used. The Japanese would just charge the US tanks. |

No, those are white hexes - clear terrain. There is very shallow water, almost a beach.
Around are also some brown hexes, those are marsh, again shallow water. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

well no.
all the hexes "function" as AAM standard ones; only difference is that here you have color hexes that help you see what kind of terrain you are in, since we are talking real terrain, not cartoon terrain.
also this map has a lot of rivers (in land streams) so it's quite challenging to move from one part to another, either by foot or vehicle.
Blast is very useful here if you can combine it with Indirect fire It's a map suited for US vs JPN games.
