Post subject: Saipan Campaign: Scenario #1 - Landing at Green 1

Landing at Green 1
Scenario Description: Saipan, June 15th, 1944. The 715th Amphibious tractor battalion landed at the wrong beach at Green-1 and must work through the chaos of both enemy fire and the congestion of friendly troops to breakthrough the enemy defenses over looking the coast. Their task was for more than establish a bridgehead but to drive a spearhead a mile inland into the foothills. The Japanese defenders of the 136th infantry Regiment must destroy the Amtraks as they head in land and sequester the marines on the beach.
Historically, the Japanese forces stalled the advance of the Marines during the initial landing, pinning most them on the beach or just a few hundred yards inland. However, their advantage was frittered away during a night assault covered in the next scenario.
Setup: This scenario use two maps set up side by side as indicated below (with map numbers and orientation of the the corner with the number UR= Upper Right)
F3(UR) F2(UR)
Order of Battle:
715th Amphibious Tractor Battalion Company C
Amtrack x 4
Marine Riflemen x 6
BAR Gunner x 2
Marine Flame Thrower x 2
M1919 Machine Gun Team x 1
Red Devil Captain x 1
5th Company of the 136th Infantry Regiment
Arisaka Rifleman x 4
Imperial Sergeant x 1
Imperial Sniper x 1
70mm Type 92 x 1
Type 92 Machine Gun Team x 2
Type 89 Mortar x 2
47mm Type 1 Antitank Gun x 1
Deployment:
Axis units deploy first and may deploy in any jungle or forest hex.
Allied units deploy on the leftmost hex of the battlefield.
Victory Conditions: Victory is determined as soon as one of these conditions is met
a) All Amtrack units are destroyed or 8 turns have elapsed
b) At least one Amtrack unit successfully exits the right side of the map.
An Axis victory occurs if condition 'a' is met and an Allied victory occurs if condition 'b' is met.
Special Rules:
Units may exit the battlefield along the right edge during either the movement or assault phase. Treat the edge as a clear hex for the purposes of movement.
For all Amtrack units replace the SA 'Transport" with the SA 'Heavy Transport"
For all 70mm Type 92 units replace the SA 'Indirect Fire' with the SA 'Improved Indirect Fire' _________________ Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,

I actually only had one myself so I had to proxy as well. I'd like to get more, hopefully if they were released in a future set. _________________ Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,

Landing at green one was a lot of fun.
The japenese set up on map F2 covering with their fire that big open space leading to the 2 easy pathes the amtracks could follow to exit the map with as little movement rolls as possible. At the back stood the 70mm AT gun hiding in the woods but ready to bombard the marines.
The americans chose to send the red devil plus 2 machine gun teams right in the middle and on each side went two amtracks loaded with soldiers.
Turn 3 and 4 were climatic but i played the japs with a fanatic doctrine. Everything had to be done to destroy the amtracks even if it meant casualties or ignoring the american infantry.
By turn 6 two amtracks were destroyed as was most of the japenese infantry.
It was a clear US victory with one amtrack exiting the map and the other one helping the infantry to clear the last japenese resistance.
Nice scenario. Nice line up plus it only took me about an hour to complete. _________________

Thank you very, very much for the AAR. If I read things right do you think the Japanese forces need a little stiffening to hit the amtracks a little harder? _________________ Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,

I really like the japenese improved indirect fire it does really help them.
Maybe a second gun would come handy to make it harder on the marines
The Japenese infantry has a tough job in this scenario choosing what kind of target to shoot at first: Amtracks or marines? _________________
