Check the modeling forum. I and others have posted step by step instructions before.
Good luck with it. They definately add to the game. _________________ Aaron

That's how I typically make my islands. With that method, I have made islands ranging from the simple islands on the War at Sea cards, up to famous real islands like Iwo Jima and Midway. I would recommend, though, that if you want to make a large island out of clay, it needs to be backed on something like cardboard or it will fall apart. _________________

Thank you for sharing this. A member of my gaming group has made some great 3D islands adhering to the size and contour of the packaged islands. He's offered to make me some but I've wanted to give it a go on my own. It doesn't seem terribly difficult to do.
You have inspired me to give this a shot. I'll share how I make out. Hopefully I won't tragically fail. _________________

You will not fail the great stuff work excellent and I have used it for many model railroad projects.
A few tips:
1. Put down paper and wer some disposable plastic/latex goves. Best just not to touch it until it dries (small islands 2 hours large ones overnight)
2. Use less than you think you will need as it does expand.
3. If you use too much do not touch it, just let it dry. It is easily carved with a knife of exacto.
4. Depnding on the size of your project try to get a small can and plan your projects out to make several at once. When you open a can you really have to use it all as it will not save.
That should save you a few headaches I experienced early on.
The biggest advantage to using the foam method is that it is light and easily shaped. I used very thin carboard (like from a shirt box) for my bases. Additionally it remains very plyable so you do not have to worry about damaging islands if you transport them. I would think clay becomes heavier and more likely to break if dropped during transport.
Good luck, _________________ Aaron
