Post subject: Argentine Navy for AAWAS Reply with quote
Anyone have any suggestions as to WAS stats for the major ships of the Argentine Navy?

Argentina was a neutral nation during the Second World War, however, on more than one occasion she nearly instigated open war with the United Kingdom.  When Argentina nationalized British Oil Fields in the early 30's some in Parliament called for more than severing diplomatic relations.  These fealings were still strong when war erupted with Germany in 1939.  The ill fealings for Argentina were not helped when durring the Battle of the River Platte, a squadron of Argentine ships litterally came between the three cruisers of the Royal Navy and the Admiral Graf Spee... allowing the pocket battleship to escape to Uraguay.  Officers aboard the Heavy Cruiser Exeter, upon seeing the Argentine squadron closing to "investigate the battle", feared they were about to enter the fray!  Indeed officers aboard the cruiser Ajax requested permission to fire upon the Argentine ships (little known facts).  Thankfully cooler heads prevailed... as the Argentine ships mearly "passed through".

The major units of the Argentine Navy include the Battleships Rivadavia and Moreno, build for Argentina by the United States.

The two battleships displaced 27,940 tons, held a speed of 23 knots, had an armor belt of 11 inches with 12 inch turret facing, and were armed with 12x 12 inch guns in six twin turrets, 12x 6 inch guns, 16x 4 inch guns and 2x 21 inch torpedo tubes.

The two heavy cruisers of the Argentine Navy were the Almirante Brown and the Ventecinco de Mayo.

These handsome ships were built by the Italian OTO Combine, but were very "non-standard" ships even of the Treaty Cruiser Era.  In fact I dont think either would have been a match for any of the "Treaty Cruisers" (ships criticised for inherant weakness) of any major nation.  Lightly armed and armored they were glorified light cruisers or flotilla leaders in all reality.  Displacing 6,800 tons, they were capable of 32 knots, had a 2.75 inch armor belt with 2 inch turret facings, and were armed with 6x 7.5 inch guns in three twin turrets, 12x 4 inch guns in six twin turrets, had 6x Vickers 40mm AA guns and 6x 21 torpedo tubes.

The light cruiser of the Argentine Navy was actually a small training cruiser, the La Argentina.  This ship was built by Vickers and in a way resembles a small "bastardized" combination of a Leander and a Colony Class cruiser.

She displaced 7,500 tons, was capable of 30 knots, had a 3 inch armor belt with 2 inch turret facing, and carried an armament of 9x 6 inch guns in three tripple turrets, 4x 4 inch guns, 8x 2pdr AAA guns, and 6x 21 inch torpedo tubes.
A neat little ship, but again not a match for even the lighter Italian cruisers nor the big American, Japanese, or British Light Cruisers.

Any thoughts on what stats these ships would have.  Again I must defer to the stat guru's.

Thanks
