Post subject: [historical ruleset] Big, Medium, Small gunnery
|
|
|
This is not new, but since we've started presenting the historical rules...
To get rid of the Confused Spotting S.A. and to make some other S.A.s and rules easier, we're thinking of dropping completely the
Main / Secondary / Tertiary differentiation that was so clear in WW2, but not at all in WW1, and simply classify the guns as
Big / Medium / Small
where Big is >10 inch
Medium is > 4.5 inch
Small is below that
or something like this.
As an example, armoured cruisers typically had 2 x Medium guns, Pre-DNs had 1 x Big and 1 x Medium guns, and DNs had usually 1 x Big.
Examples of rules that make use of this classification:
- Firing two salvoes of the same size causes "confused spotting" and either both or the second salvo receives -1 penalty per die.
- Big guns get -1 on each die against hull-3 and hull-4 units, and -2 against hull-1 and hull-2 units.
- Medium guns get -1 on each die against hull-1 and hull-2 units.
The card template will have to change a bit to read B, M and S, instead of M, 2, and 3 on the gunnery symbols.

I totally agree, some of these Pre-Dreadnoughts had as many as 5 batteries. _________________ Gaming for 36 Years.

Big= <8" and above German BC's had what 9.1" ?
Medium <5" - 8"
Small 5" below
I actually like just split in two at 8" to keep it simple. _________________

What about
<9 Medium gunnery
>=9 Big gunnery
(I think that 8 isn't really big gunnery if you consider that there were even 15inch ones in WWI)
<4 Up to now we have described this as Defensive armament. Since it's so common, it can become part of the stats of the card, instead of S.A. _________________

Yeah, but I think we could lose it also and just list each battery, I'm happy either way. _________________ Gaming for 36 Years.
