Operation "Spring Wind" February 1945
a Historical Scenario by Grenzewolf
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Operation “Spring Wind”
Battle for the Gran Bridge Head
Background: 17-24 February 1945 operation “Spring Wind” is launched. “Spring Wind” is the opening move to the last German offensive “Spring Awakening”. In an attempt to secure the Riechs last remaining oil fields and divert elements of the Soviet juggernaut away from the Berlin areas, the 501st Panzer Battalion augmented as the IInd Panzer Battalion of the 1st SS Panzer Division Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler of Panzer Gruppe Pieper are covertly sent to Hungary. The objective of “Spring Wind” is to wrest the Bridge heads from the entrenched 6th Guards Army part of the the 3rd Ukrainian front . The Red Army in December 1944 has advanced as far as Lake Balaton occupying territory between the Danube and Drias. The relentless Soviet advance seriously threatens Germany's final source of oil.
German Objectives: Secure the Soviet Gran Bridgehead in preparation of the “Spring Awakening”. Bypass or capture the Town of Nem. Seldin and or Establish a bridgehead across Parizky Canal. If possible contest or control the town of Muszla
Soviet Objectives: Hold the East and West Gran Bridgehead. Destroy the bridge if capture is imminent. Prevent establishment of any new bridgeheads to the South. Defend Muszla in order to launch later counter attacks.
Victory Conditions: Winner is determined by points value of Objectives met added to the points value of enemy units destroyed after 10 rounds.

Aftermath & Designers Notes
An excerpt from the report by SS-Unterstrumfurher Borchers, platoon commander in the 9th (Pioneer) Company, 1st SS Panzer Regiment: "It was an attack like in our best days. King Tigers, Panthers, armored troop carriers rolled irresistibly toward the positions at high speed. The leading vehicles ran into mines and the advance continued. Szorgen, Bator-keszi, Kobelkut, Muszla and other towns were taken. The local population cheered us. They had been forced to suffer greatly under the Soviet occupation troops."
Operation "Spring Wind" had been brought to a successful close with the total destruction of the Soviet Gran Bridgehead. But now the concealment of the German Elite troop movements were made clear to the Soviets as to Army Group Souths planned offensive and reserves were rushed up to reinforce the intended attack zone for "Spring Awakening".
I designed this scenario to capture the dynamics and feel of "Spring Wind" while presenting players with the challenging multifaceted tactical concideration faced by commanders on both sides during the battle. After playtesting and tweeking several times I promise you it delivers.
Thanks to AA&M's ever increasing range of mini's I was finaly able to present this Scenario with the actual units and equipment involved. The exceptions being "Pioneers" & "Red Army Sappers". A brief explanation on their representations here. Both units receive "Ignore Disruption". The Soviet Sappers due to their rapid and timely reactions in blowing gran bridge and but especialy the SS-Pioneers whom on all accounts were wittnessed under heavy direct and indirect fire repairing bridges or assembling bridgeing equipment. The Pioneers additionaly recieve 5/5 defense not only by those accounts but each element actualy represents a platoon thus being more manageable for the scenario. The loss of one is severely felt but the loss of two can cost the game.
Please concider haveing all players study the scenario prior to play to develope a plan of attack, defense & counter attack. But stay flexible as no plan survives fist contact.

FACE OFF Turn 4
Arrival of the Soviet Heavies drives the SS-Panzer IVs back aborting their fordeing attempt to the south.
The Surviving Pioneer works desperatley to open up a lane accross the severely damaged Gran Bridge under the protective guns of the Tiger II and Panthers.
Holding the last Sturmovik at bay the Wirbelwinds work with the SS Panzer grenadiers trying to clear the tenatious remenants of the West Bridge head Defense.
Panther Assault! Turn6
With a single path opened by the SS-Pioneer the Panthers charge accross the bridge. Empty SdKFz 251's and 250's follow leaving the SS-Grenadiers behind whom have been drawn into a protracted battle with the valiant west bank defenders.
The Panzer IV's have all but been wiped out in a fiegnt to draw off the Red Armor.
The Tiger II demonstrates why it is King by Destroying the disrupted "Beast Killer" at long range avenging the Panzer IV's that had managed to Disrupt and remove Hulking Mass previously. The last SS-Panzer IV takes advantage of a Flank shot on a T-34/85.

Click the "Hot Links" under the Maps & Tiles section.
Also there are lay out instructions to show you how to position your maps North to South. Or Just click the "Map Layout" for a big expandable picture.
Hope this helps. I know you'll enjoy the game plus have to a few very cool custom maps to add to your collections for other games. |

I guess I will try this using memoir 44 borads; should be possible to recreate the battlemap that way fairly well!
They really ought to release many more maps and map packs! |
