I don't know about you guys but I don't like when the game is over before it started because one player shows up with a battleship and is facing a swarm of subs. I also don't like when I'm building a fleet and I end up a few points under the limit.

I propose upgrade cards. Show up to a 200 point battle with 195 points of units already picked and see what your opponent brings. He has a mine layer, buy a paravane upgrade for 1 point for a destroyer and let it clear local mines on a role of 5 plus. Also buy torpedo bulges for your carrier to give it TD1 and Slow 2. At the same time your opponent sees that you brought an air heavy fleet so they use their left over points to buy smoke generators and proximity fuses for the ability to lay a smoke screen and plus 1 to their AA roles.

I'm considering whipping up a small deck of generic abilities like these, does it sound like something you guys would use or is it over complicating the game?

Seems like a neat idea. I saw a thing on eBay that had game effects, but I didn't know exactly how it was used.

It had one card of elevator malfunction (1-2 nothing, 2-3 1 less plane, 4-5 2 less planes, 6 3 less planes can take off from your opponents carrier.) seemed neat

No, I don't know of a good place to get silhouettes.

1. Which one would you put on it?

2. If I was looking, I was pm other card-makers and ask them where they find them.

I think weeds created all the team decks, so he might have them or know where to get them. Brigman and SWO_Daddy likewise have cards with silhouettes. Maybe ask them?

I make the silhouettes from illustrations and images I find online. A major source of free WWII ship and aircraft profile illustrations is the-blueprints.com.

Eventually I'd like to knock out my own deck of ships but baby steps for now.

Don't worry, you'll do fine. I learned the hard way that I don't catch my own graphic or text mistakes very well, but I did catch it before getting decks 2 and 3 sent to the printer. So, now I have fixed deck 1 (printing-masters not yet made) and will get on with "fixing" 2 and 3.

If I can survive this, so will you! I look forward to your cards!

That one is rather strong for 1 point, seeing as you could get rid of "bad luck" or "slow 3"

I was originally thinking about making it 2 or 3 but then I looked at the units with fatal flaw, bad luck, and jammed mount and none of them get significant price reductions for having a negative SA. Hood is just over priced, and Mogami is 18pts with bad luck, long lance and tough cruiser. Haguro is 18pts with slightly better vital slightly better torps, LL and tough cruiser.

I would NOT recommend using Haguro for comparison, it's an outlier.

I appreciate the feedback and discussion!

My thought on speed was it only affects the ship at most half the turns in the game if its slow 3, less for the others. Its not a massive improvement and it may help get some of these units in play more frequently. My other big reason for adding this is that I intend to add some upgrades that have both positive and negative effects so this could be paired with those as well.

I compared allied and axis BBs that were roughly the same and the costs of slow 2 and 3 us and uk bbs are just about the same as speed one ijn bbs. the rest of the axis has nothing that old and slow to compare to and nobody has anything comparable to the french bbs.

From what I've seen negative SAs don't subtract cost from a unit. They are just historic flavor and removing the SA does not make the unit overpowered so only adding a point to the cost still maintains balance.

Anything with Speed 2 and no slows reaches the objective in 3 turns. If you have Slow X ... odds are you don't. That's what makes the "slows" less worthy.
