In looking at the armament between the Washington and the Iowa, they both had 9 16" guns and 20 5" guns.
Shouldn't their gunnery attacks be the same? Were the Iowa's fire control systems better than the Washington's?
It appears that both class ships had the same unit director (Mk. 40) |

The Iowa's main guns were an updated model with greater range, and I believe a larger shell. This seems to be where the difference would be. _________________

The Iowa had 50cal guns rather than 45 as in all previous US 16in ships. This allowed a significant increase in muzzle velocity using the 2700-lb shell that the North Carolina and South Dakota classes also used.
The Iowas entered service with RPC which helped improve gunnery, especially in long engagements. The NC and SoDak classes were all eventually fitted with RPC, but they started out without it. |
