Well at the moment I have none.  But after some trades and some printing I should have NA, EF, ER, and original.

I had all of the official maps, but I traded away my Eastern Front maps for some pieces I needed. I didn't really care for them and only paid $11, so it was fine.

A note to scenario designers:

I ahve talked with my fellow players...several of them from different groups and at convention.  Welove scenarios, but we need the maps to go with them.  The biggest problems are scenarios with custom maps.

Any of the conventional WoC AAM maps can be found without a lot of difficulty.  Custom maps we have to print out or take to Kinko (to the tune of a lot of cash to get printed the right size) are impracticle.

For the folks I have talked to, if it requires a custom map, they dont bother with the scenario.  It is too much money or time or prnter ink for a scnario you will play 1-2 times.

Stick with the maps you can get access to.  The newer 3" hex maps are easist to get and play on, but a few of us old die hards have the 2" ones still.

Just my $.02 worth.

how much can a sheet of paper cost in USA to print? is that bad the economy over there? Laughing

I am one that plays exclusively custom maps and I do not find them expensive. This is no way to develop a game with 5-6 distinct cartoon sheets that fit each other... it's more of a joke.

I encourage everyone to create their maps, print them and play on them. This is the only way the game will survive, because if you stick to the play-to-death WotC maps you will get bored before you know it. Where is the challenge in there? Is like walking on the same street, over and over again with different shoes.

I say create your map/terrain, create your scenario and play it! Think "out of the box", you will achieve much more!

My thanks for the $.02

It sounds like "custom map" means anything that needs to be printed, yes? (including the Echo, George, How, Pegasus, etc. maps in the archive?)

What is "your people's" feelings about terrain tiles to change standard maps? Is there an upward limit of how many changes before they will not want to use an altered map?

Terrain tiles are great and we use them alot.  To make a few alterations to a map, there is nothing better.

For custom maps I am talking bout ones you ahve to pay $40-$60 for to get a nice 3" hex one sheet map like AAM sells in thier map books.  It is too much unless the map has other uses beyond the particular scenario...and most dont.

I have printed out maps on my 8.5X11 and taped them together but they wear fast and dont store for long periods of time...and after a while get discarded or torn up.

It gets difficult to make the same old maps work over and over, but the terrain doesnt ahve to be exact.  Its a simulation, cange the hexes you need using special rules etc. or use tiles.

The original (smaller) maps are still very popular.
I must admit i've switched to the new ones. Cool

I agree that the tiles are a must Snips. They do change the actual map easily.

I tried to use tiles, at first... maps looked like crap, with the small hexes flying around the map or moving out of position. Then you cannot use many tiles since the map will look funny. At least, that is my opinion.

I do not know what quality you look for, when you are printing a map, but 60$ is a lot, that is true. I use for my maps some 4 sqm of paper + ink and the cost is around 20-25$ at best. The paper is a normal one, not the shiny thing, but I cover the map when deployed for play with transparent plastic sheets so it works great and never wears off. You can even spit on it if you roll crap dice with your Vet. Tiger (as I do roll usually lots of 2's).

I used to print standard maps and then tape them together to create something, that is a possibility, but you should protect a little the map to avoid wear from numerous games. Still, I do not dismiss this option, it works well.

For the hardcore AAM gamer I believe 3D terrain or custom maps are a must.
AAM gives you the possibility to customize your games, by creating new maps/scenarios, by modifying the minis or rules if you wish, so this is something really cool.

Agreed @Red Baron

If people ask me what tabletop game i play i usually answer Axis & Allies Miniatures. They often roll their eyes and i dont hesitate to say "with HHR houserule system on custom maps with custom 1/144 minis". They look at me and dont understand a word since its a collectible minis game why do i use different minis and rules?

After they have seen the minis, the cool HHR system and the gourgeous maps by Baron they often say it feels like a whole new game and not A&A anymore. Thats a good indicator and probably the best argument for the A&A rule system: its very customable. Do whatever you like with it until it fits exactly your taste. And if you think the standard rules and the 39-45 maps are cool enough for you and all you every wanted, then...well...stick with it. But you may give enhancements a chance some time...you probably like it Wink

It is very flexible.

Starter map, (2 copies), North Africa and Eastern Front. A copy in photograpihc paper of 2" starter maps but we dont use it. We prefer 3" because we start playing with North Africa with only v2 vehicles. We use transparent plastic sheets to protect the maps too.

I have 7 of the 8 original 2" maps in the combat zone winter version (one sided) that my FLGS gave out as prizes. I recall several months ago seeing a link for downloading these, as I still need the Charlie 1 map. I didn't download it then and then forgot where it was that I saw it. Not sure if it was on this site or somewhere else, anybody got any idea where I could download it? Or does anybody have one they want to trade for units or another map? I do have extras of some of the other snow maps.

I'm tempted (like Snippersly did) to work on a 2"inch map scenario covering the battle for l'Abbaye d'Ardennes in 44.

Do you still play with these maps or would it be a lost effort Question
